As pointed out below, SU was out rebounded again by SH. SH took 7 less shots than SU which may account for some of the rebounding difference. Also, how does a blocked shot figure into rebounding? Does the team recoving the ball get a rebound? SH had 22 offensive rebounds. Is that because on several occasions there were mulitible blocks on one trip down the court and SH got the ball back to try again only to have it blocked again.

Also got to keep in mind that Syracuse gives up a lot of opportunities to rebound the ball because they are going up to block shots.

Perhaps the IPA's were getting to me but I was surprised to look at the box score later and see we were outrebounded. Didn't feel like it when I was watching. Again, could be the numbing effect. It sort of bothers me that JB just concedes and shrugs his shoulders in pressers accepting the fact that they aren't very good in this dept. I'm optimistic that it will improve.

...of course JB cares...and so should the players...rebounding is important especially if blocks and steals arent there...

yes . . . for the official scorer, every shot attempt must result in either a made basket, a trip to the line, or a rebound.

If you notice, the team that misses the most shots tends to be the team that ends up with the most rebounds. The team that misses the most shots also tends to be the team that loses. Rebounding is the most over-rated category in basketball. I'll take getting out-rebounded in every game we play so long as we hold that team to %18 shooting like we did to Seton Hall.

In certain close games rebounding can make a difference, but its unlikely to make a difference in more than one game all year.

Seemed like they got a lot of rebounds in the last 5 min. of the game. Probably when we had Fair, SOutherland and Rak in. Most of them came when it didn't matter

Yeah hard to see how rebounding margin makes a difference in a game where we scored 26 more points than the opposition and were ahead by 30+ points at times. The object after all is to score more points than the opposition not pull down more rebounds.

We're not going to be a good defensive rebounding team, period. I've posted the numbers before, we've been inside the top 250 in defensive rebounding % one time in the last 10 years. And that was of course the 2008 team, which was the worst team we've had in the last 10 years.

The defensive rebounding might improve slightly, but it's never going to be a strength of the team as long as we're playing zone. But the offensive rebounding is usually good to great, and defensively, we force enough misses and don't foul so we're usually a pretty good defensive team. I do think the poor rebounding may put a cap on the defense though; we've been in the 15-20 range defensively the last 3 years; that may be about as good as it gets.

Rebounding margin is an oversimplification. Defensive rebounding factors into defensive efficiency. If you have two evenly matched teams on offense, defensive rebounding will certainly be one of the deciding factors. SU is vulnerable in this area, it's been masked to date.

Ken Pom noted that SU defense isn’t dominant partially due to their "anemic defensive rebounding."
