rebuilding the basketball program

I hear you, since with NIL anyone with half a brain can see it's pay for play and there is no way to really separate NIL (aka popularity) from on court performance. This is clearly not what the inept NCAA envision when they came up with NIL but at least they had the foresight to recognize that they couldn't allow NIL to be used for recruiting or all bets are off, but they didn't see the court decision going against them so we are here.

But if we removed the very last layer of this "student athletes" playing for this team, than the players will be employees or contractors for the school. They will sign an employment contract with SU for a year or two...they are not students.

Will the real students and the community still feel the same for the team and support it the same way? I don't know.

I presume once the requirement of being a student is removed, you can sign someone for 8 years, there is no longer a 4 year eligibility thing that has to do with being a student anymore.

Red shirting makes no sense right? You are not ready why even pay you to sit? Come when you are ready to contribute.

A professional BB player can join the team. Why not? Take Melo when he couldn't get a team to sign him and forced his retirement could come back and play as a pro. So can anyone who still want a pay check to play for a "college team". It's college, G-league, Europe/Asia or NBA and one can move around.

NCAA will need to revise it's mission statement since it's no longer overseeing sports being played by student athletes.

Not sure what happens to volleyball or curling do these sports all get restructured to be employment based or outright eliminated.
Does the NCAA have competitive curling?
I think that most of the non-revenue sports will either go away or become club sports. I think the NCAA as we know it will disappear. It won't be needed in my dystopia college sports world.

I hope I'm wrong about all of this, other than maybe the NCAA going away.

The HC is paramount in the college game.
I judge the competency of a HC by how much better a team performs in late January through February. I disliked but respected John Thompson as a HC because you could always count on his teams being better in February as he worked them to be so.
That said, since mid January we are 3 and 11 that tells me we need a new HC !
I know this isn’t a revelation but the facts support my position I believe.
Red is I’m sure a great individual, but sadly lacking in the equipment needed to win. Some of this sad state is clearly his making while others factors do contribute but in the end it is clear too many on this board SU BB isn’t relevant or fun as it exists now.

It's all about the money, stupid.

Being terrible until schools can pay guys directly is something I've accepted. White and Anthony won't have a chance next year with Autry but the next coach is likely dead in the water as well but worth taking any sort of risk on of course.

Switching coaches every 2 years until we find the right guy is all I can suggest.

I don't know if NCAA has competitive curling LOL I just threw it out as a non revenue sport. OK may be fencing or high jump what's going to happen to those sports?

To me it seems if the whole thing turns to a pro model arrangement there will be other side effects. I anticipate there is an effect to NIL where some donors may not be as enthusiastic to support the team because these are no longer students and are hired one year based mercenaries.

I also think with a pro model, players who are basically disconnected from the student body and the school. Weather would become more of a factor in deciding which school to play for 1 year, and locations like LA or Miami will be more attractive than Syracuse or Nebraska.

I don't disagree with anything you've written. I'm just very down on college sports right now. It feels like something I loved has gone bad (football has been a bright spot).
It stinks that it has all been reduced to the amount of money schools are throwing at athletics. Yeah, I get it, money was always being spent in the dark, but winning and losing wasn't so dependent on $. It used to be spent to get recruits. Now, it's used more to take developing players from teams that depend on developing players, so that the "haves" get the top HS recruits and the top developing players.

The biggest scam is being played out on the fans. Can you imagine a pro team asking the fans to contribute to a fund, in addition to paying for tickets and merch, to help pay the players while still reaping big bucks?

i'd rather watch competitive curling than what i'm seeing on the hardwood this year.
