I don't think this is sustainable, you do not have an unlimited NIL budget, and what makes it worse is getting a player doesn't necessarily translate to winning, as that player may just collect NIL checks and play unmotivated or don't want to give 100% or worried about injury.
There has to be a coach with a system that finds the right players to fit that system.
First of all, as much as I think NCAA is inept and corrupted, I think the first principle of players "willing to play for free" is still valid. One must find players who are willing to play for free...I mean NIL is nice, but that they MUST play the same way whether their NIL is $1 or $1M, you can't decide how much effort to put in based on your NIL package, or how much you are getting paid when compared to your teammates. If you are playing just for the NIL checks, move on.
Following this thinking, how one recruit a player from HS or from the portal, cannot be 100% transactional. There will be NIL $ involved yes, but there has to be some degree of loyalty, respect and vision built into the recruiting package. It is not about who can offer a higher NIL, it is about who can help you in the short, medium, and long term in life. Favors is a currency...you never know what will happen and may be one day you need justice to be served and money can't buy that. With Syracuse the coaches and players are often described as a "family", and as a family you provide services to each other. We should bring in a hammer, a cleaner and a closer. Oh wait, we already have a "closer" on payroll, let's use that.
Gerry is a champ, he should be wearing his 2003 champ ring when he recruits. The player who wants to be part of this family needs to bow and kiss the ring..."Be my friend, coach Macnamara..." to be a made member of the team.
On high stake, once in a generation talents, Gerry must make offers they can't refuse. Use a carrot and a stick, prepare a competitive NIL package, but let the recruit knows either his signature or his brain will be on the NIL contract. On competing schools, give them bloody horse heads or let them sleep with the fishes.
To get the maximum efforts from the players, need to motivate with an iron fist, do not tolerate losing. Tell the players there will be consequences if they lose, to lose a game is the same thing as taking sides against the family, and one can only afford to do this once. Keep your teammates close, keep your rebounds closer.
