It seems over the last 2 years or so that there has been a change to our recruiting areas. We have, since Doug has gotten here always recruited NY hard (to mixed results honestly). Also, Florida and Penn has been another solid area for us bringing in around 5-7 kids a year. Other than those three states we have no solid consistency.

-Georgia seems to be the new hot bed, landing four (maybe 5) kids in two years. I think Adkins has the most to do with this and I really like this trend.
- Michigan, led by TW is another area that we seem to be recruiting a lot harder recently. That is another trend that I like. Get the kids that get overlooked by UM and MSU.
- New Jersey we continue to have inconsistency problems there. I know people have said Moore had some embarrassing moments there but overall I think that NJ talent is a bit overrated.
-Tenn- Again, led by Adkins, have recruited a bit there. I would like to see more done there.
-Mid-Atlantic, Marrone has only gotten Lewis from Maryland and a done ok in Virginia. I think that is an area where GROB did well and that we could improve.
-New England, Basically nothing since Loeb.
-Colorado- Has the Mullen pipe ran dry? I really wish we had gotten Nduka. One that got away.
-Ohio, Where have you gone? I remember being excited when we got Peterman, Robinson and Coker that we were going to recruit hard there. Never happened really. I think that Cleveland could be a nice hot bed for us.

Our recruiting has improved since DM took over, and I think with another solid recruiter on the staff, it could be top 40 yearly. WITH a new facility, which is crucial in recruiting, I think that we could be top 30 or better in country. Just another reason to hope that it gets done.

What happened there?

Someone else could tell the story better, but went to a powerhouse school and pretty much did not know what he was taking about in terms of the players.

Junior will probably be All-P12 next year

We need to get into the DMV badly there is a ton of talent in that area every year

Didn't kowtow low enough.

Regarding Georgia, DM says he and Adkins have recruited that state extensively in their SEC days. Both have many contacts there. He thinks it is relatively underrecruited. While Georgia is outside our core 5 hour driving distance recruiting area, there are many direct flights between Atlanta to Syracuse.

For all these reasons, we recruit Georgia. Joining the ACC just makes it easier to recruit that state, as evidenced by Morris' comments.

You summarized it well. I think that the groundwork we are laying right now will lead to very good things once the worm turns for us. It gets a little better each year, and at some point the lid will blow off. I look forward to revisiting this topic once the new staff members join in the next month or so.

The Georgia trend is very nice. Wheatley needs a raise so he can continue to make inroads in Michigan/midwest.

I think the issue is less where we recruit than whether the players we recruit can play at this level. Kudos to Wheatley notwithstanding, I'm not sure how good it is to get leftovers from Michigan and Mich. State.

I frankly think that the jury is still out on this staff's ability to identify and successfully recruit better players. I'm encouraged that we've moved into some areas that could well prove beneficial upon our move to the ACC.

But at this point, the glass is both half-full AND half-empty.

I whole heartedly agree that Jersey kids are highly overrated and I also think MD kids are overrated. That said, I'd still recruit there. Here's where I'd put all my resources to reruit in no particular order:

New York
PA
NJ
New England
Maryland
Virginia
Florida
Georgia
Michigan
Ohio

Even if Ty Wheatley left I'd still try to recruit the Michigan and Ohio states. These places are just like Syracuse, they are blue collar rust belt cities. These kids already own winter jackets. They are cold, snowy and grey,. They are an easy car ride or a short direct flight away. We can now also offer them a chance to play against big boy programs and southern schools in a more glamerous conference.

Good list, Phat. Think I'd add the Carolinas to that now. Fits our new ACC profile, plus UNC is facing the NCAA hammer. Will be interested in who is brought on board the coaching staff, and whether they have a particular geographical background that would help in recruiting this area.

Not sure if I'd prioritize New England much. Granted, we got some good players out of there during the Mac and P days, thanks to their contacts. But the pickin's are pretty slim. And pretty picked over.

What are you basing this on? They are just starting to reap the rewards of the network that had to be rebuild. This is not an overnight process. I love how everyone criticizes the process from the armchair.

Well, of course, Otto, that's not what I said. I said that 'the jury's still out...'.

You said,we are 'just starting to reap the rewards...'.

Same thing to me. And pretty vanilla, if you ask me.

If you're gonna criticize me, and I know that I've been criticized for some of my opinions and deservedly so, at least use the reading comprehension skills you may have at one time possessed.

Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Florida should be our major priorities. The rest we should just test the waters with the better talent, and maintain connections through a phone call once a month or Christmas cookies.

I don't think there's ever been more than 2 or 3 kids from Ohio on a roster at any one time. If there have been it's been a uncommon event, and it hasn't been much more than that.

Your posts are always the same Steve. Meaningless, but amusing. Have a nice Christmas.

We may not have a rich tradition with bringing in kids from Ohio, but it would be nice if we made a push for some of the kids as the program is getting back on its feet. Maybe we can bring in a coach with good ties to Ohio, especially for some of the defensive players and running backs they put out every year.

With Hoke getting Michigan going again, and Meyer coming in at OSU, I would be hesitant to spend too much time in Ohio right now. Too much history to fight against if both those programs are clicking. But if we are talking about going after 1 or 2 guys a year, all for it.

I would rather we get a coach with good ties to Pennsylvania for recruiting right now. Both major programs in the state are in flux and we have some history with PA kids.

Yeah, the Pa. connection is definitely the better choice of the two, but I still like Ohio. Maybe try and grab three or four kids every year or two. I think Michigan and OSU focus on recruiting nationally, while always pulling fifteen or so kids out of Ohio and Michigan. One could hope some good ones like Thompson can slip through the cracks in this area though. Georgia and Pa. are definitely musts though.

Jason Emerich, Blue Mountain, 6-4, 275, Sr. first team class AAA state of Pa. Good example of the type of guys we should be getting from Pennsylvania. Emerich is a two star guy for major recruiting services, but still managed to make first team all state. By the way only five offensive lineman were picked for the first team.

I remember Coach Mac saying they once tried to make inroads in the Cincinnati area but nobody wanted to hear about Syracuse there.

We are in the ACC, so we should recruit the Eastern seaboard. Add to that extreme Eastern Ohio since it isn't far from Pitt. Maybe Eastern Tenn as well since it is close to several ACC schools. IMO that is it. Don't bother recruiting anywhere else, including Mich. Kids want to play in their region. While we have Wheatley we should absolutely use him in Michigan. But if/when he leaves we should replace him with an Eastern guy with contacts somewhere in the East.

We certainly are not going to be battling either one of those schools but they're are a ton of D1 kids in those states and those two can't have them all.

Meyer is only going to recruit the very cream of the Ohio crop and then focus nationally.
