Recruiting Trend

I remember Coach Mac saying they once tried to make inroads in the Cincinnati area but nobody wanted to hear about Syracuse there.

Cinncinati area is different. I'd make Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown the main recruiting focus in Ohio.

Cincy to Syr is at least a 9.5 hour ride. Cleveland/Akron/Youngstown to Syr you could easily do in 5.5.

And in it's neighboring state, it seems like there should be more opportunity than ever in PA this next year, and perhaps beyond depending on what happens with PSU.

I think we should be recruiting Nebraska HARD! They have a lot of big farm boys (and girls) for our OL needs. And CNY has a lot of farms!

New England's a joke to even talk about... There are maybe 5 kids out of MA and 10 out of CT a year. High school football's a joke in NE.

Well, that's pretty much a law of math.

Which was my point.

Don't think I've seen enough to be either optimistic or pessimistic at this time. Then again, like many of us, I've been through this quite a few times now. When and if I see significant improvement on the field, I'll be 'all-in'.

Haven't seen it yet.

That's about right. Of course, it depends on where you're starting from in CNY and where you're heading to in the NEO / Cleveland area, but not factoring in those incremental adjustments, it is about a five hour trip from Syracuse to Cleveland, and a little over a 4.5 hour trip from Cleveland to Cincinnati.

IMO, Cleveland should be about as far into Ohio as our coaching staff should venture. Further west and you get into hardcore Big 10 country. And further south you get outside of our preferred 5 hour geographic proximity. That still leaves a ton of area in NEO for us to cover. And for the record, that's the same area that brought us the likes of Reyes, Smith, and more recently Coker / Robinson.

You are right, Cleveland is about as far as we should go into Ohio. Fits into the western NY, western PA type kids we like. Michigan is a short plane ride, full of talent that plays at a high level, and used to crappy weather. And we have three members of the staff with ties to the area, Wheatley, Daoust and Shafer...
Love the moves in GA. Would like to see a bit more northern NJ and the VA/MD area.

NE is a joke but it's been good to Syracuse over the years. There's going to be a top shelf lineman coming out of Mass next year from Everett HS - Diamond Ferri's alma mater. Will be interesting to see how involved we are. We've already offered.

We used to recruit VA/DC/MD big-time when we had Rogers and White. Might've been our most-targeted area for recruits. Perhaps the most over-targeted as well. I would think that we'll make this an increased priority with the move to the ACC. Wouldn't be surprised if one of our new staffers has ties to that region.

Everett's really the only MA school worth building a pipeline to. Not many prospects come from anywhere else. UConn has a commit that played in my high school league (awful league) and my little brother's team shut him down this year at RB. Really grasping at straws by recruiting anyone besides the top 2 players in MA.

I don't think there's ever been more than 2 or 3 kids from Ohio on a roster at any one time. If there have been it's been a uncommon event, and it hasn't been much more than that.

Warning... Declarative Statement to follow:

We have three Ohio kids right now...Robinson, PTG and Coker
We had four in 2010..these three counting Carter

End of Declarative statement...

Like I said, unusual. Between 2001 and 2008 4 kids signed out of Ohio, Anthony Smith, Delone Carter, Ryan Gillum, and Trey Fairchild.

Cleveland is definitely an area we need to recruit. There has always been a plethora of athletes coming out of the area. Virginia pretty much seems worthless outside of Virginia Beach, Washington DC seems to have forgotten about us since we stopped recruiting there (McReynolds to Neuhiesel all the way across the country with no chance of him being re-hired? That was awful).
