Recruiting vs coaching

I am fine with Fran and growing pains no problem. The only real 2 questions I have is

What will we do with the defensive scheme? 3 down linemen and playing soft zone will not work here. We will never have the talent on the DL to run a scheme like that without bringing exotic pressures. Is he married to ERob and is ERob married to that scheme?

What is the plan at QB and does Nixon's offense only work with a top level QB like McCord. Are we going to try to pay the top portal QBs every year? Not a bad plan if we can get the cash but I doubt that plan will be sustainable.

Other than that first time head coach will have ups and downs.

That’s exactly it. We are a stepping stone program now. I won’t be upset if Fran bolts at some point for a bigger program because that indicates that we’re doing pretty darn well here in Syracuse.
The program has had two coaches hired away in 35 years.

Some stepping stone.

You don’t get hired away unless you do the current job very well.

It’s the LAST thing we should be worried about.

Can’t run 4 man lines right now because of numbers. Just lost a lot of guys through the season.

Never is a long time.

Right I wasn't just talking about this year more like in the future but we did only run 3 man lines to start the season it isn't like we just started doing that because of injures clearly that is ERob/Frans philosophy (so far).

I think Nixon likes to throw but I don't think he needs a McCord (although it would be amazing if McCord is the new standard). When Angeli starts next season he won't be as good as McCord but I'm confident the offense will still be good.

There is no way the balance will be out of whack as it is.

I’m fine with throwing a lot. But it can’t be as much as it is this year.

It’s way too much on any line, let alone a program like ours that will never have a ton of OL depth.

I do think this is an outlier year.

Angeli?

It's year one. Check out Colorados record last season.
Yeah, that's a pretty good analogy. The Fran Brown gamble was about whether he would be able to stack recruiting and portal classes and learn on the fly as a 1st time HC. Year one has already given us an indication of his potential. The '25 recruiting AND portal classes will give us the next indication, followed by whatever off season staff adjustments he might make. It's way too early to make any other sweeping conclusions.

Colorado returned their top tier QB
The point is, this was a total and complete rebuild and we were bowl eligible in October. He got McCord before most knew his name, I'm not betting against Fran.

You don’t think people knew who the top 25, 5 star QB for an 11-1 Ohio state team was?

The jury is out on Wildhacks experiment. U know where the jury is not out ? Indiana. A moribund loser program in one year headed for the playoff. Because of one guy. Did we even call him?

We don't have enough healthy DLineman to play 4 DL this year.

I like Fran ALOT. However, what concerns me is I don’t see problems being fixed in game or even in season. An examine of this is bad tackling. This has been a problem since the Ohio game and has not improved. Tacking can be taught and should be able to be fixed.
Well, yeah, but tackling is something fixed in the repetition of practice, not at halftime.

Given how we've performed well in second halves for the most part I would say the staff is pretty good at halftime adjustments generally.

Yeah it’s almost like national media has forgotten about him now that he isn’t at Ohio State.

I agree with the last part about not betting against Fran. But this was not a total and complete rebuild. This is more of a renovation from the Dino era, taking things to another level. McCord is being talked about less nationally since leaving Ohio State. It’s why I was shocked we got him since his name was a household name last year and would be the starter and in the heisman talks for Ohio State this year.

Ehh not to rehash but his wins by season were 4, 8, 5, 8. Yes he left for the NFL but he didn't exactly take us to any promised land.
I have many issues with Marrone, but getting 8 wins in his second year was one of the more incredible coaching performances I’ve ever seen.

Hell, the guy made the program respectable and competitive in his first season after being a literal national laughingstock the year prior.

Or do we not remember the atrocity that was the 2008 Penn State game?

This wasn’t a rebuild. Give Fran credit for retaining our top players from last season, because they would have bolted if Dino came back. But there was a decent foundation here. I mean we did win 6 games last year.

Let Bill O’Brien coach this SU team this season and we’d probably have a better record. Now, the upside that Fran brings in the next few years is much higher. So I’m still on Team Fran. But we’re seeing the challenge of hiring a thoroughly inexperienced HC, and letting him staff the team with similarly inexperienced guys.
