I'm sure it's hard given how critical relationships are in the process, but it pretty amazing how much emphasis kids put on coaches when making a college choice. I would hope that more parents/mentors make sure kids are evaluating the school, program, other players, etc knowing how uncertain the coaching landscape can be...for whatever reason.

While I don't fault a kid for rethinking his decision if a change is made, you do have to wonder why someone would put all their chips on one person vs. the larger culture/opportunity.

Not picking on ZA in particular, but what would be said if Player X came to a program for Coach Y, and then transferred with said coach if they took another college job. Me thinks that would be frowned upon.

Try thinking about it a different way. Many student chose Syracuse because it has the BEST, without a doubt, broadcast journalism program (basically all of S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication is the best) in the country. Now imagine that this top ranked program is garnering all of these accolades and the resultant great job prospects based off of one to three of the best professors in the land. Now imagine those professors leave four months before you are to matriculate. Would you have the same desire to attend?

The point, these kids, be it football or basketball, are all majoring in sports at college. The hope is that they also get a degree in something else while on campus ... but they are DEFINITELY picking the school based on their major like just about every other kid.

They would have to sit a year. It's not an uncommon thing. When you spend 20+ hours a week with the coach/staff, that is an important relationship.

Just a little personal perspective when I was guiding my daughter through the recruiting process for soccer I told her to concentrate on academics and where she wanted to live for four years. In the end however she also loved the coach who happens to be 66 years old and she asked the question before comitting how long he intended to be around, and he promised barring any serious health problems he would stay until at least her junior year. That coach student-athlete relationship is very important to the kiddo even if all else at the school seems like a perfect fit right or wrong its a fact.

Marrone and Hacket were highly qualified teachers of one of college footballs most sophisticated offenses...now he doesnt even know who is teacher is going to be and he had to make his decision. The kid did the right thing for him

Would have made a great Master Card Commercial to see Zach Allans face after he enrolled at TCU and found out Casey Pachel is back at QB for next year (Reinstated that afternoon, probably right after he enrolled, that would be Priceless! After all, his reasoning for early enrollment was to compete for the QB position this spring, and essentially being 6th on the depth chart there, he can pretty much forget that. Casey is a proven leader and QB, no way he doesn't get the job.

Yeah if he can stop snorting lines off his playbook...

I hope he has the opportunity and wins the job. My impression from the article is that Casey is still on the road to recovery. It also mentioned that he hasn't touched a football or lifted a weight since he left this fall. It would be a nice success story if he is able to win his job back.

Would be nice story for sure, but still feel bad for ZA. He was stoked to come here, for what ever reason a kid from Texas would be is a mystery, but still the same was excited about being here. I think family may have come into play here and he had to make a last minute decision. Do hope it works out for him, but to hear this the very first day he enrolls had to get a roll of the eyes from the young man.
