Red's gotta learn when Kiyan is cooking

OK, so today against Pitt, when he entered in the first half, with about 12 minutes to play, Jeff Capel went after him on the first 3 possessions, and Pitt scored 3 times. Yes, after the 2nd burn, Kiyan got a foul in the lane and made his FTs.

When he came in in the 2nd half, he gave up a bucket on his first defensive possession. He also had one play (might have been in the 1st half) where a defensive rebound came down near the foul line and bounced, and he really didn't make the effort to win the ball. He didn't want the contact.

In the 2nd half, that's why Autry went to the zone, to protect Kiyan, and try to get the benefit of his offense without giving up so many buckets.
It wasn’t Kiyans best game. I’ll admit that. I can admit Starling had a good game, but it was also his best game in a year.

That said the zone was awful. We played it without Kiyan too and maybe got one stop.

Did anyone notice his body language today? Was moping on the bench, barely flinched during will Kyle’s insane dunks meanwhile everyone else on the “juicing station” was up cheering

He needs to play harder. He's lazy on D, never dives for loose balls or scraps for rebounds. His interest only picks up if the ball is in his hands. The only thing I admire about Red this year is that he just hasn't given him minutes. We need him. He needs to improve his effort.

This is what we heard when JB was coach too. Anthony has way more upside.

Yes, he does. But we can't afford to lose more games while giving him an extra 10 or 15 minutes a game. How did you like that zone we played?

Want to see more of that? Because that was to protect Anthony so he wouldn't get exposed on defense. Be careful what you wish for.

If I haven't addressed this in our thread already - college programs should NEVER count on freshmen to shoot a good percentage from 3.

If you want him to play an extra 10-15 minutes, I'd like to see at least 30%. We've got six other guys making that many. It's hard to justify giving him more time until he plays better.

I saw someone else talking about how he could have played Betsey more, that he only played around 20 minutes, and he made 3 of 4 threes.

However, we had 4 front court guys who all played 15-20 minutes - Soare, Kyle, Betsey and Sadiq White. Kingz got 25 minutes and Donnie got 30. Seeing how Kyle had the foul trouble, that seems a pretty reasonable distribution to me.

Some possessions, or some sequences in the game maybe you need more defense, more rim protection, more rebounding than Betsey offers.

If Kiyan were playing better, he could easily move into that 15-20 minute amount of time on the floor, and you would be reducing JJ to about 25 minutes. Last couple games, he's only played about 10 minutes.

You talk like these things matter but I'm not sure how well guys are playing or whether they're hitting certain statistical benchmarks really matters when it comes down to the minutes distribution.

Have you ever played a sport, FFS? Of course the minutes distribution matters to the other guys on the team. You want them involved, you want to use the positives they can give you.

noticed something on kiyans free throw routine:

he only glances at the rim at the very last second and then quickly shoots

i think hed do better if he slows down and looks at the rim for a bit before rushing up the shot

Matt, you made up a percentage that supposedly Autry has to enforce in order for Kiyan Anthony to get minutes.

I’ve seen lots of comments (mostly on FB and Instagram) regarding Kiyan and building around him. I just don’t see it! To me he at least a year, but probably 2, away from leading a team. I think most of the commenters are just saying it because they want Melo to remain around the program.

kıyan ain't carmelo. but very few are. kinda unfair to link the 2 but you can't change the inevitable association at SU. he's gonna have to let go of the coat tails and find his own path to success .all starts with being a team player. make everyone around you better. his dad sure did.

kiyan has an undeveloped body - almost no muscle on his frame - once he fills out, he'll be good

but its probably one of those things where he kills it as a senior

He’s not as athletic and smooth with his movements as the really elite college players. I think it’s more this than muscle on his frame.
