To be clear, this is not a bash on Red thread - just something I found interesting in the press conference.

I haven't watched a presser in a long time but was really wondering what I'd see tonight so I watched. First, Red has definitely gotten feedback and improved in his communication and leaving out the "you know" filler words. May not seem like a big deal, but I give him kudos for that.

As for the content, it was kind of tough to watch really. In the first few minutes, I was reminded how much Red cares and knows what high level basketball looks like. It looks like it absolutely pains him to coach this team. After a few minutes, you realize that he's just letting it all out. He makes zero bones about how it's pretty much all on the players. That's where he began losing me. He said over and over that the coaches gave the players the info but they failed to execute and be tough. Well, that might be the players but it also might and probably is the person delivering the message.

I came away very conflicted after watching the presser... really feeling for a person who I deeply respect as a great former Cuse player, really feeling for another human going through clearly a very difficult time, and finding it very difficult to listen to someone who is constantly deflecting and blaming others.

You are correct. I saw the same thing.

I always say “desire and ability are two different things that are often conflated”

Red definitely has the desire. He just doesn’t have the ability. It most likely comes down to his communication skills. How he is coaching the players. He hasn’t cracked the code of how to deliver the message to transform the results into success.

In other words, he has a skill gap in his coaching.

This was his best presser in terms of honesty and tone. It might have been more helpful to talk like this after Hofstra instead of now, but who knows.

I have no conflict on this one.

Pressers are cosmetic. Red can call out his players and lack of toughness a he wants, but it’s all on him.

He constructed the roster.
Hey set the tone.
He is the leader.
He had massively failed on getting through to anyone.

Other than Kingz and the enigma that is Freeman, every player regressed from start to finish. The team fell apart playing defense in some near historic way. Shot clock violations coming out of timeouts. Bizarre substitution patterns.

If there is a “Good Guy” Forum, happy to post wonderful platitudes about Autry there. But he is been an epic failure with the program I’ve been a lifetime fan of. His day of departure cannot come soon enough, and while it should all be done with respect, get him out.

Couldn’t disagree more. Plenty of criticism can be placed at his feet. But yesterday was 100% on the players. Every loose ball, every rebound, every hustle play went to Wake Forest. Where did the rim protection go that was there earlier in the year ? THEY massively failed.

One thing Red constantly says is “we talked about it.” That doesn’t get it done. You need to show them and drill them. Over and over. You can talk all you want about how you’re going to defend something, but you have to show them and constantly drill it in practice. Maybe he does, but he is always saying we talked about it. It just makes me wonder what is being taught.

Yep, drill and drill. If some players don't or won't get it, then they sit. If they are slow and not pushing it in a game, put in someone who does. Try different combinations of players, even if not natural. Send the players a message that all out is what you expect and demand, and if not then others will play.
I know that's easy for me to say, but the team has not responded to him telling them, so he's got to demonstrate. Way too late unfortunately

Look I know hes frustrated but he says he wants energy, effort, defense etc... but plays Sadiq 12 minutes in a game where he scored 12 points in those minutes along with 3 rebounds which was I believe the second highest total on the team. Its clear multiple players on the team dont care at all about defense or "not dropping the rope." But I question why he doesnt just play Sadiq 30 minutes a game? Its over and has been for weeks I get it... but man it was tough to watch Sadiq play so well and then just rot on the bench while JJ, Donnie etc.. play no defense

When it’s one or two players, I’ll buy your argument.

When it’s systemic failure, it’s on him.

He’s ruined my fandom. For me the teams have been unwatchable. I have checked out as a fan. I might dvr and catch last 2 minutes of a game, but that’s about it lately. It sucks. I used to love March, now I’m shining up my golf clubs getting ready for season

Yeah. It seems like Red may know what the players need to do much of the time, but he has a difficult time getting them to know. That is a skill unto itself.

Autry had years to prepare to be head coach. He's failed in almost every possible way.

Red was fortunate to have been given this season. What he did last year, from the off-season onward, warranted his firing.

He got another chance. He was given unprecedented resources. He assembled the roster of his choosing. And it's been a disaster.

Of course he knows what's wrong. He knows basketball. He's simply utterly incapable of coaching it.

You're looking at last night. The poster you're responding to was speaking about the entire season.

But why aren’t they passionate? Why don’t they want to try? Who is the common denominator?

With some exceptions, the players are no where as good as we thought they were.

No, man! You are here posting. You are frustrated, but if you are spending time on a Sunday morning here on the Fan, you still have your fandom.

Next year will be better. Watch….

Indeed.

Any upper level hiring type manager, etc. worth one's salt knows this. And, it's why I place my, let's just say, frustration, far more with the powers that be here than Red. Red bleeds Orange through and through as a past solid player, alum, assistant coach, etc. Good leadership/management is generally well aware of one's "Seat On The Bus," and Red's isn't/wasnt' that of a P4 HC. It's they who've failed much more miserably than Red.

I reckon it's not all that surprising though due to SU's history, track record, etc. Look at all of the speculation, etc. present in the 'Coach Search After Autry' thread. An apparent cherade going on with them brass folk behind the scenes.

Autry’s core problem was always getting his players to show up every game to play 40 mins. I call BS if anyone is gonna come in and say Autry and this staff showed up every game for 40 mins themselves.

The tape doesn’t lie. How many times have we seen them sleeping or clueless on the bench. If you’re Barnes or Self and got 40 years of coaching you can play it cool and be more relaxed. Autry can’t pull that off.
