Remember the temple game near the end of the P era?

It’s not that the funding was drying up. They didn’t lose funding. The problem was that the was no new INVESTMENT in the program. Other programs were spending lots of money on the program and facilities to catch up to us and then pass us.

Many years ago I guest lectured at Newhouse in an auditorium in Newhouse I. On the wall of that auditorium was a plaque that said the funding to renovate the room came from the 1992 Fiesta Bowl. That SU used bowl money to refurbish an auditorium at the Communications school is everything we need to know about the athletics funding situation in the 90s. Appalling.

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt that he at least said something to Jake. Paul should have gone public but he was too much the loyal soldier which is a factor in getting the promotion.
yeah he was a good employee. Wow, what a weird concept. Not every HC was like Boeheim who complained 24/7 about things.

Paul was a good man and i'm sure voiced his opinion to the powers that be. You can't create money and create funding. It was a different time. Not sure people realize this.

As i've said ad nauseum, there are buildings in Eggars with plaques that say "this was funded by the Fiesta Bowl". That was our funding, actual performance, not rich guys writing checks at that time. We're not Alabama and never was (or will be). We are lucky these conference deals write us a massive check

They certainly didn't understand the changing dynamics of college sports and the arms race that developed.

That's on Jake

I think it's on Shaw and Lou M, the CFO.

Even though it was getting out of Jake's comfort zone, I think he understood the landscape changes and had communicated it. Seeing that Shaw and Lou weren't on board and kept raiding the football money for the general fund, he decided it was time to retire.

That's how I recall it anyway.

2 Chancellors in a row who didn't understand the world they were living in.
That set Syracuse back almost 15 years, and we are now starting to dig out.

I would say it set us back farther than that. The lag between falling behind in investment and the success falling off hid things for a few years.

I was trying to be a little nice to Shaw, even though his get a life, should have gotten the trustees looking for a new Chancellor at that time.

To be fair, Shaw probably had the right opinion with how sports should fit into college. He just didn't recognize the mixed up upside down world we moved into where sports became more important than anything else. Remember when head coaches were the highest paid employees at <$500,000/yr? It certainly escalated quickly.

Here’s the bottom line:
1) Money that other schools would have used to invest in the athletic program - like the money from the ‘92 Fiesta Bowl - was spent refurbishing academic buildings.
2) It wasn’t broadly known how extensive the raiding of revenues was until after Coach P was fired.

It’s great that he was a loyal guy who just plowed through a situation like that without complaining publicly (or taking a job elsewhere). And maybe in the grand scheme of things, it was the right call for the school to do what they did. But if all Coach P did was complain internally and then get back to work - that’s equivalent to signing off on the decisions. There are some positions high enough up in an organization where you either resign or you’ve agreed with the direction - head coach in football at an FBS program is one of those positions.

Anyone saying that Jake and Coach P didn’t have any other options or focusing totally on their loyalty miss the point - sometimes the most loyal thing to do, and the right thing to do if you want the organization to be successful into the future, is the most extreme option. Quit. Jake probably figured this out 7-8 years too late, Coach P didn’t have the chance to. But both found out that “loyalty” doesn’t matter much when the leaders of the organization are steering right into an iceberg, and you’re not doing anything that might cause them to change direction. That’s not true loyalty - that’s the worst possible type of “yes man” there is.
