Remembering 2000 in Auburn Hills

If we're going to wallow in misery about SU NCAA losses (and MSU), then we have to go back to 1979. SU had a top ten team with legitimate title aspirations and upset losses by UNC, Georgetown and Duke opened up a clear path to the Final Four. SU only had to beat Penn and St. John's to get to Salt Lake City and set up a rematch of the prior year's victory over MSU. Rather than the legendary Bird-Magic final game, we should have seen the Louie and Bouie show in the most watched college basketball game ever.

How about 1995 against defending champ Arkansas in 2nd round. Lawrence Moten calls timeout with 4 seconds left and we're up 1. Slight problem however, we were out of timeouts. Scotty Thurman makes one of two technicals and we lose in overtime. That team should have done some damage.

All we had to do to beat the defending national champs was...NOTHING

Just doesn't hurt as much now, Just a thing that happened. Syracuse has extracted revenge vs Michigan St at Breslin Center in our champ year, at the Dome, and now back on the biggest stage, in their home state.

Our block S is cooler too.

BOEHEiM'S REVENGE

3/11/78 Western Kentucky 87 Syracuse 86
3/15/87 Syracuse 104 Western Kentucky 86

3/22/84 Virginia 63 Syracuse 55
3/18/90 Syracuse 63 Virginia 61
3/27/16 Syracuse 68 Virginia 62

3/30/87 Indiana 74 Syracuse 73
3/28/13 Syracuse 61 Indiana 50

4/1/96 Kentucky 76 Syracuse 67
3/18/00 Syracuse 52 Kentucky 50

3/23/00 Michigan State 75 Syracuse 58
3/18/18 Syracuse 55 Michigan State 53

3/18/01 Kansas 87 Syracuse 58
4/7/03 Syracuse 81 Kansas 78

3/18/05 Vermont 60 Syracuse 57
3/19/10 Syracuse 79 Vermont 56

3/20/11 Marquette 66 Syracuse 62
3/30/13 Syracuse 55 Marquette 39

3/22/14 Dayton 55 Syracuse 53
3/18/16 Syracuse 70 Dayton 51

It's nice when it comes two years alter because there can be some players who were on the losing end and then on the winning end: Kueth Duany, Jeremy McNeil, Brandon Triche, James Southerland, C. J. Fair, Baye Keita, Trevor Cooney, Michael Gbinije, Tyler Roberson and DaJuan Coleman all had that experience, (although I think DCII had been shut down when we lost to Dayton in '14 - but he was still very much a member of the team).

You can add this to the list:

3/10/99 Oklahoma St. 69 Syracuse 61
3/23/03 Syracuse 68 Oklahoma St. 56

I think only one school has defeated Boeheim twice in the NCAAs. Ohio St. in 1983 & 2012. Of course that could change on Friday.

That makes ten, (counting Virginia once).

Of course, it works both ways:

3/21/87 Syracuse North Carolina 79-75
4/2/16 North Carolina 83 Syracuse 66

3/24/89 Syracuse 83 Missouri 80
3/24/94 Missouri 98 Syracuse 88

3/24/96 Syracuse 60 Kansas 57
3/18/01 Kansas 87 Syracuse 58

3/30/03 Syracuse 63 Oklahoma 47
3/27/09 Oklahoma 84 Syracuse 71

But that's only four.
