Just got word from Hilton Head that The Old Scout passed away earlier today.

A sad day...he was my guiding light as a youngster on all things SU FB. RIP Arnie

A Syracuse legend.

Touching Lots of Bases, Poem Football Predictions, the Old Scout.

I read everything he wrote when I was a kid.

He was the most, from coast to coast"

Sad to hear. The Old Scout was a legend. Had the pleasure to meet him several times when I was young as I dated a niece of his for a year or so. JD girl.

They don't make them like him anymore. Arnie was a bridge between the incredible writers that dominated sports coverage in the 1920s-1940s and the professional, objective (and sometimes really boring) journalists of the modern era.

I loved his Old Scout articles. Very knowledgeable, very insightful, I always looked forward to his stuff. Even as a ten year old, it was the first thing I read each day.

Tried to find an example of one of his Old Scout articles to link so younger board members could get a feel for his writing style. Sadly, I couldn't find one. If anyone can find one, please link it in this thread.

Arnie was named an honorable mention AA in lacrosse while at Syracuse in 1942. Note that Ken Molloy of SU was named to the 3rd team the same year. Molloy would win a silver star in WWII, become an attorney and was instrumental in the development of lacrosse on Long Island. He also was almost single handedly responsible for getting Jim Brown to Syracuse. He tried to get SU to offer him a scholarship but when told this was not going to happen, led a fund raising effort to pay for Jim to go to Syracuse.

RIP Arnie. The highlight of the Sunday paper was the Old Scout's take on the prior day's game.
BTW, one of my former roommates who worked in the paper's sports department used to mimic Arnie. I don't know how accurate it was as I never met him. First Rick Dean, and now Arnie.
