RIP Devante McFarlane

I coached Devante in 7v7 competition during his juinor year in h.s. He was always drivin and coachable. Im excited for him. He needs to continue to make the most of his opportunities. He's doing a great job so far. Wish him the best.

I have always rooted for him to succeed, will root that much harder. Very brave young man to go through this battle and come out the other side better for it.

Tremendous courage by Devante to fight this illness and to tell his story . Like others, I will root even harder for him to succeed.

But this is also a great job by Nate Mink and syracuse.com in handling a sensitive story. IMO Nate and Stephen have taken beat coverage of this program to a level we haven't seen before. They deserve more credit for that than they get.

Was a favorite of mine during his time. RIP.

Noooooooooooo. This one hurts fellas. I don’t always mention the players Ive work with. Devante was one of them. Him and Wayne Morgan was on our 7v7 regional team back in spring 2011. Devante was a great kid that wanted to do well in life. I haven’t been in touch with him since he left SU. It’s painful to hear of his passing.

So sorry - it cuts that much deeper having known him so much better like you did at such a young age. Take care of yourself and remember that you made a difference. RIP Devante.

Comments on DeVonte McFarland from my past SU football previews:

2012: "Another contender is Devonte McFarlane, a freshman from Long Island who’s been switched over from defense."

2013: "Devante McFarlane, (6-0 188), looks like a natural in his high school film. He just seems to have an instinct for picking his way through a broken field."

2014: "George Morris and DeVante McFarland have shown obvious talent: good size, (both about 6 feet and 200 pounds), excellent speed and great instincts. Morris rushed for 334 yards and scored twice while McFarlane ran for 292 yards and a score but averaged 6.1 yards per carry. They are clearly the future of the position and will get a lot of touches this year."

2015: "I like our running backs. Devante McFarland has decent size, (6-0 193) and speed and is nifty picking his way through defenders to find an opening. He had an 86 yard non-scoring run vs. Wake Forest. Everybody has raved about George Morris, a back we got out of Georgia a couple of years ago. He’s the same size and speed as McFarland. He’s gained 435 yards in two years to McFarland’s 461 but DeVante has averaged 6.1 yards per carry to 3.8 for Morris, who has to start showing those practice moves in games."

Just saw former Cuse RB Devante Mcfarlane passed away at 29. Remember being really excited for him and his potential and then he seemed to fade away and eventually left the university. Always sad to see someone go that young.
