RIP Jerry Tarkanian

His greatest legacy it's perhaps coining the most cliche, played out joke in college athletics.

Anybody who sues the NCAA and gets a Multi-million dollar settlement from that cartel of an organization is okay by my book. RIP to the Shark.

Amen. Those corrupt thieves would annually try to Tark anyway possible when it came to invites/seeding to the NCAA tournament. Far from a saint but he fought them tooth and nail. Interesting that the NCAA would cough up $2.5 mil to make him go away.

Tarkanian told the best stories.

Take ex-NBA player DeShawn Stevenson, for example. Stevenson was a gifted high school player from Fresno who Roy Williams, then coach at Kansas, coveted. Trouble was, Stevenson was struggling to post an SAT score that would make him eligible as a freshman. His best score: 450. Williams was worried sick. In a last-ditch attempt Stevenson flew across country and re-tested. His new SAT score: 1150.

"Someone oughta tell Roy Williams that kid should forget basketball," Tarkanian said, recounting the story. "That kid's a Rhodes Scholar."

The test score was nullified. Stevenson was drafted by the Jazz in the first round. Tarkanian just shook his head at the whole thing.

Tarkanian also told a story about Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun. The coaches were in hot pursuit, Tarkanian said, of the same high school recruit when Tarkanian got some bad news -- he had cancer. Or at least, Tarkanian said that was what Calhoun was telling the recruit.

Tarkanian did not have cancer.

"I had cancer so I didn't get the kid," Tarkanian said. "Calhoun got him instead. But you know, I always really liked Calhoun."

I never respected Tark after he threw JB under the bus like he did.

When did he do that? Watch the last few minutes of JB's presser last night. Has nothing but praise and admiration for Tark.

I remember a story from either Raw Recruits or Sneaker Wars where Tark lost Hot Plate Williams to LSU and then a year or two later he gets a call. It's Hot Plate's mother. She's at a casino and ran out of money and wanted Tark to spot her or get the casino to spot her. Tark says, "I'm sorry I can't help you. Say, why don't you call Dale Brown?"
