RIP Lou Carnesecca

For anyone who may remember Golden Valley Sports camp...

Carnesecca was there as a guest speaker one year I attended. As he waa giving his clinic he asked a camper to come up as part of a demonstration - they were passing the ball back and forth and Louie told the kid to "put a little mustard on it." well, the kid put some zip on the pass, and it ended up breaking Louie's finger. He toughed it out and finished the clinic with a busted finger.

I don't remember the St. John's connection with that camp but several Johnnies were part of it the years I was there - Mullin, Jason Buchanan, Walter Berry, a few others.

One of my sons attended that camp for a few years in the summer but it was for football.

I also there a few times, Willie Glass who also played at St John's, was a speaker one of my sessions. The connection was an assistant coach on Louie's staff with the last name of Mirabito, who was from the area, and I believe his family ran the camp. Same family name on the many gas stations in that part of upstate.

It's very sad how we're losing all the legends from that era. Rollie Massimino, John Thompson and now Carnesecca. Fortunately it seems like JB, Calhoun, Rick Pitino and PJ Carlisemo all still seem to be going strong health-wise.

College basketball just doesn't have those charismatic, larger-than-life coaching personalities anymore. Dan Hurley is the best coach in the country but his personality is the equivalent of a colonscopy prep. Guys like Jon Scheyer or Hubert Davis almost seem too nice/boring.
