RIP Mike Williams

From the moment he first set foot on the field, he was different and a major factor for Syracuse football.

It is very rare for a freshman to be a difference maker right away and it is even more impressive given he came from a football program and a football league that is not known for producing a lot of great players.

Add in that he was really a basketball player who ended up playing football because he was a tweener in basketball and had the perfect body for a football WR and that makes what he did at Syracuse and in the NFL even more remarkable.

He was a blast to watch play. He had everything you wanted from a fan perspective: great talent, a huge heart and extraordinary competitiveness.

RIP Mike. You will never be forgotten in Syracuse.

Yep, he scored seven points in a game for us early in the 07-08 season. Just an incredibly gifted all-around athlete, similar to McNabb.

If I recall, it was the Iowa game in 2006. He learned a couple plays and when he made them we all knew this guy was going to be really good.

Terrible tragedy. RIP and thanks for the memories.

Wow. It definitely felt weird that the story went from “he passed away”, to “he’s alive and recovering” to “now he really did pass away”.

Bizarre all around. And sad. This whole story sucks.

Williams eventually died on Sept. 12 at the age of 36, and the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Department said he succumbed to "Bacterial Sepsis with Cerebral Abscesses and Necrotizing Lobar Pneumonia due to multiple Dental Caries and retained tooth roots."

(Dental caries is a prevalent chronic infectious disease resulting from tooth-adherent cariogenic bacteria that metabolize sugars to produce acid, which over time demineralizes tooth structure.)

Essentially, his brain had pus growing around it after he had severe dental problems to the point where infections spread. Initial tests showed he had brain swelling and infections.


Very interesting to people who just had a root canal. Like me.

Sounds like a tragic case of someone who hated to go to the dentist and allowed their dental health to really deteriorate. It’s been long known that neglecting one’s dental health affects the heart through infection. Gum disease can affect the brain if not treated, causing infection, sepsis even dementia. Sad.
 
My dentist mentions it every chance he gets - and I’m glad of it. Mike Williams was a special talent, rest in peace
