Hall of Fame quarterback Sonny Jurgensen dies at 91

Hall of Fame quarterback Sonny Jurgensen, who has held franchise passing records for Philadelphia and Washington for more than five decades, has died at the age of 91.

just a simple play

I remember in college intramurels I was playing QB and had no way to get the pass where I wanted except to throw behind my back. DLine dude stepped in front and last 2nd and it drilled him in the mouth. Almost led to a brawl for them thinking I did it intentionally.

I was like yeah I planed to wait until the last 2nd to throw it in your chops. if I wanted that i would have just hit you like the Longest Yard

My family had Eagles season tickets in the 60s so I saw Sonny for two years, 62-63. Best pure passer I have ever seen. Jurgensen to McDonald was a big part of my youth.

Fitting he and Lolich passed the same week. Both sort of symbolize to me the pre fitness athlete. Both had great arms

I was a Rams fan when I was a kid just starting to watch football. I jumped ship to the Redskins when Coach George Allen came over from the Rams and brought a bunch of the Rams players with him. I remember being in awe of Sonny and his passing. His passing style makes me think of Drue Brees in that he had a beautiful deep ball.

Young me could never comprehend why a team would make a trade with one of their rivals. To me, it was very weird. Although I was happy when the Red Sox traded Sparky Lyle to the Yanks.

The new regime that came in 1964 saw Jurgensen as to much of a party guy. They got rid of McDonald as well.

I am From Philly...there was some scandel at an old hotel Hotel on Chestnut and Cobbs Creek Parkway that involved Sonny, a late night party, a local female TV personality and other women. I think the trade had more to do with his off field persona than on the field play. Philly got too hot for Sony...may he RIP

As we shared a corporate partnership with the Redskins at the end of the last century, I had a few occasions to have a wee dram (or 2) and cigar with Sonny. Great guy. RIP.
