What with that Newsweek article? I mean talk about looking for controversy where there is none. .
Still cannot believe this. He is a freak.
68-70 degree water for 16 hours
8-10 foot waves
salt water swelling you up
extreme body exhaustion
taking on mouthfuls of saltwater...
The odds of survival were microscopic and he made it.
He should be our next HC.
Hadn't looked at it from that angle Chip but great observation. As a busy professional by day and Dad at night, I'm lucky if i have time to wipe my ass. That is a bit crazy.
I have a bad feeling there is more to this story, and now the media is digging ... Only a matter of time before some different truths come outI'm with you right up until the end... (which I know was tongue in cheek).
To take a less popular approach, I can say that I'm amazed at the strength to survive and even though I never met him personally I find myself so relieved he's alive, but...
Who, on earth, with two daughters at home that you love so much, goes out on their 36' boat alone, 9 miles out into the ocean, leaves the autopilot on, leaves life jacket off, and tries to reel in some big fish? I've done some dumb things in my life but come on...
Thank God he's alive to tell it. Let's hope he learned enough not to try something like that again. I'm guessing his wife gave him a huge hug and then hit him over the head with a frying pan.
I design ass scopes. I consider it my medical device version of method acting.Make time to wipe. Or else you'll find less opportunities for the busy professional by day part. Trust me, people just don't want to be around it.
It's easy to ask in hindsight, but most people on boats that big don't wear life jackets unless they're in rough water. And 9 miles isn't really that far out on a large boat. During early salmon season go to Lake Ontario and look out on the horizon and you'll see tons of boats that have to be that far away and farther. I'd be willing to bet most of the people on those boats aren't wearing life jackets.I'm with you right up until the end... (which I know was tongue in cheek).

Now if he goes out alone again with no life jacket, I'll question his intelligence and sanity.
It can be similar. If you're far enough out you can't see land and storms can whip up waves similar to the ocean. I'm assuming since he was fishing and the boat was on autopilot the water wasn't all that rough that day.I grew up on Lake Ontario. It's so completely different from the Atlantic Ocean.
Yes, he said he had no flotation device in his CNN interviewHas it been confirmed that he did NOT have a lifejacket on?
