his reasoning is essentially the following. "I've seen Ohio St., Kentucky and North Carolina play several times. I've seen Syracuse once, on TV vs Florida. and my opinion is that the other three are clearly a decided step ahead of everyone else, and I don't think I'm alone in that thinking."

He also goes on to say that its really not that big a deal and that the polls are meaningless...and he is right about that.

However, he also has to understand that by being the only voter to have syracuse lower than #2, he's putting a bullseye on his head for Syracuse fans.

I have two issues with his thinking. 1. He's essentially saying. "I've seen enough to form my opinion, and I ain't changing it." If that's the case, then turn in a poll the first week of the season and jsut keep turning in the same poll everyweek...and if that's the case, then lets just take your vote away from you."

Secondly,he's right in that I think there are other people in the country who think there is a clear separation after those three schools...but they managed to still vote Syracuse #1 or #2, because, and this is why people are pissed, THEY'VE EARNED IT.

He goes on to say that really, this is the difference between the basketball poll vs the football poll, in that it means much less. but what he missing is that one of the reasons why people get pissed about the football poll is because some idiots don't reward teams that have earned the right to move up in the poll. Its the whole crux of the argument against the football poll...some people arbitrarily determine who the most talented teams are in the country, and even if you go undefeated...you might be left out because the perception is that teams that have lost are still better, because they pass the eye test.

Okay, rant over.

So he saw us dilly dally against a final 4 caliber team and that's what he comes up with? Did anybody tell him that game was a media circus with a ton of distractions?

I would like to hear how he rationalizes both Kentucky and OSU losing to Indiana if they are both "clearly a decided step ahead of everyone else."

so basically hes saying hes ignorant enough to judge us on one game where we beat a top 10 team pretty handlily.
Hes not alone I am sure other fans of other teams feel the same way because we has so many freaking weapons.

Fab, kris, scoop, Dion, triche, cj, James are all expected to put up a double double every other game. Thats 7 guys.

4 guys to take you off the dribble to the hoop Scoop, Kris, Dion, and MCW. Three of them and Triche have been making tough, phusical, long, high, layups and floaters all year.

4 guys who can hit the jumper off the dribble in CJ and MCW kjo and Dion. Dion hitting offbalence ones and fadeaways.

Scoop, Jsouth,Kris, Dion, Triche, 5 guys who are good enough to knock down three three. Fair and MCW who are good for one or two.

KJO, James, and triche to hit from NBA range.

Melo to score in the paint. Low post as well.

A zone defense that extends further then any zone we have probably ever had. Extended in your face guards on both sides of the court(we never have that). A true eraser our best shot blocker (weakside and standstill) since etan thomas/ Mcenil in the middle. And Our best zone to take charges probably ever.

And our 6 freshmen/sophmores are going to blossom much more come march.

Yeah ok be ignorant if you want its going nowhere fast!;)

Hell, I think that at least UNC and Kentucky have more or better top end talent than SU does. We have a large collection of very good college players. Of those, I think 4 could become elite college talents this year: KJ, Dion, Fab and Brandon. Will they, I don't know. If they do, they look out, the sky is the limit. However, right now, at least Heson and Barnes would start for SU, as would Davis and Kidd- Gilchrist. Also, Sullinger and the Thomas kid would probably start at SU. Therefore, it is hard to say the SU is better.
I think that depth is over-rated, unless your 1st 5-7 players are not great. Only 5 guys can play at any one time. If we are happy we have depth becasue at least 2 of our guys should have a good night on any given night, I am not sure that is better than having 2 great college players (Melo and GMAC) who you are pretty sure ARE gonna have it every night.

Also, I don't mind anyone voting based on who they thinks is the best team. Just because Kentucky lost to a resurgent IU team on a last second 3 pointer when a fresman forgot to foul at IU in total bedlam, doesn't mean they are less good than SU.

It is kinda meaningless...but I'd be curious what games he's seen Ohio State, North Carolina, and Kentucky play in. I've watched all three several times as well - at times all three have looked great, at times they've played poorly. I realize that nobody can watch every game, but it sounds like this guy only judges teams based on games he personally watches, and ignores the box scores of all other games.

I'd actually feel a little better if he said he watched against Florida, Va Tech, and Stanford - because Syracuse didn't look great in any of those games, and he wouldn't be judging a team on the ridiculously small sample size of one game.

kentucky, unc, ohio state have all lost their only true road tests. we are unbeaten. silly argument
(and bloomington is 179 miles from lexington which i guess makes it a home game to some people.)

I love that that they give votes to morons who have only seen the best teams play once. The season is 2 months old. He has only seen us once? Why is someone like this voting?

I mean if he said he's only seen Northwestern once I'm okay with that. But he's barely paying attention to top 10 teams and he gets to vote? Why?

Vote us 10th if you want. But see us play. Shouldn't he actually be watching games of lots of teams if he is a voter and not just Duke, UNC, UK, etc...?

They should take votes away from dudes like this. I may not always agree with Katz or Davis or whomever but at least they are watching the stuff out of games. It should be taken more seriously.

Bingo.

In all honesty, why are "columnists" like this allowed to vote? The AP should check the waters.

Same thing for the Baseball Writers voting for the HOF... when did all this voting stuff become placed in the hands of guys that usually don't play the game at a professional level. Usually don't cover teams on the national level. And, work in a business where friendships and vendetta's are so closely tied to personal interaction with players and coaches.

Don't really care where he votes us.. but the one game he says he saw us play was Florida, and he says he thought Florida looked better lol That really shows his knowledge of the game. SU had control of that game from the opening tip, did Florida even have the lead?

I would say anybody who writes about a sport should be watching at least a couple games a day. Hell, most of us here do that and none of us get paid for it. How on earth should a guy get a vote if he can't be bothered to watch the game.

At least in baseball stats tell the story. In basketball, the best player on a team can come off the bench. If you aren't watching the games, our six point Marshall win looks like a close game.

Guys should at least talk a good game when they get votes.

Unless he just has rabbitt ears there is no excuse for not having checked out SU more.

If this is the same Ron Morris, then I'd say he has very little credibility even in South Carolina.

Well, maybe controversy is just his thing.

I have no problem with guys voting the way the want. It does seem odd that he has only seen one game. Perhaps more odd that he would say so. But I'm not losing any sleep over it. SU still has to go out and win. More than likely we won't stay at #1 anyway. Teams do lose games, and votes change.

Sorry to disagree with you ..1x ... SU doesn't lose ... runs the board... stays #1 and wins the NC by kicking UK's butt ... there ya go... noone has to watch the games anymore. I've jjust summarized SU's season.
