Room is certainly opening up.

I want to say I remember they said last year they wanted to stay at 85 and then would explore after that.
If we do not move to above 100 scholarships it will be a very odd move and I would question as to why we just don't fund them all.
(I do know they are giving some of the $20 mill to the basketball team(s) and football is getting most of it)

If we are only going to be at 85 we need to use a completely different strategy. If a Frosh cannot contribute right away they probably shouldn't be brought in.

You answered your own question... the salary cap... the more players on the team the less each one receives... splitting the $15 mil with 85 players yields a max salary while splitting it with 105 doesn't... maximizing the compensation for each player is the gambit.. for a school the size of SU I think it's the way to go because we just can't compete with the big schools NIL wise.

That is $175k vs $150k when other schools can offer $150k plus under the table to make up the difference.

That's 25k we don't have in NIL... we need to maximize compensation anyway we can... certainly not ideal but we are what we are... we're never going to do what the big boys do... we have to make our compensation package as attractive as we can make it and rely on coaching to make up the difference... and that remains to be seen.

Too small an amount IMO. It won't close the talent gap with the big boys and won't create a gap with our peers.

I doubt it's a 25k difference with each individual player. That's just what it averages out to. Player 85 that is nothing more than practice fodder isn't getting any more than he would have. Keeping it at 85 vs 105 allows you to take money and give more to guys on 2 deep.

Top of my head
Need a starting RB and backup RB (maybe)
OL help just about everywhere
2 portal QBs with at least 20 - 30 games played in college
DLine and a STUD DE (don't think we can afford one but we can dream)
Starting LB and backup LBers
Safety help
Vetern punter to compete with the freshman (maybe)
Expereinced TE, yes I know we have good depth but they are all lacky real game play

We need to push hard for upgrades and not get in the slog of trading 2s until later.
I'm sure there are things I missed but that's where I'm at without to much thought haha.
Not sure we need as many as indicated.
Agree we need the qbs. Don’t think will get two with those starts.
I do think we get one RB.
OL needs to improve but I feel with a new coach they will take a step forward. Not sure we really go into the portal at Oline.
Need a couple DT and DE.
Also a couple of safeties. Maybe one LB but I have more confidence in Bryant, Tremble and AD with the new scheme.

If I'm going to be honest, I love Fran, but I suspect that his "get in your face" style doesn't play as well when the season turns to crap.

You have to meet your team where they are, and these coaches failed to do that after Angeli went down last year.
I am not sure what that means. I think you need to be consistent as a coach.

We are young and thin on experience.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the porta this year.

Wildhack has stated he wants to pay players the maximum allowed which can be done at 85 but not 105... the thinking here is that 85 being paid the max is more an advantage in recruiting than 105 making less than max.
My understanding is every scholarship dollar above 85 comes out of your 20M school nil budget. So there is flexibility but it’s a question of how much impact do guys 86-105 have?

I don't know -- I just think it's the new normal, in the era of the transfer portal. Very few players seem willing to stick around and develop anymore.

Yeah, I get it. But just makes it harder for a program like ours. Recruiting should just be here’s your offer, take or leave it.

All the old methods, spending all that time cultivating the relationship with the kid and the family, complete waste of time these days in more cases than not.

Well, a lot of these guys it was going to be their third year in the DART program. They got bigger, faster players than they ever did before. This year is supposed to be the payoff with the roster of Fran's Guys maturing as players. I'm disappointed to see so many have darted out.
Tried to dart but only farted

Yea those old methods brought us all those championships. That’s a shame.

I REALLY can't wait until the portal opens next week.

Going to be interesting to see how we fill all of these holes.

But more importantly, the mass exodus feels like a continuation of a season that totally spun off the rails in mid-September, on a bittersweet day where we defeated Clemson but lost Steve Angeli for the year due to a non-contact injury.

I look forward to getting back on the "winning" track, and that starts with landing some good portal transfers. I think we're going to have some fantastic news beginning next week...

This mass exodus seems like what happened to Dion at Colorado...How are going to fill all these holes?

Colorado is even more screwed because they have portal exodus while also only bringing in 12 freshmen as of now and the previous HS classes have been of similar size.

Yeah I think we’re going to really like what happens over the next couple of weeks once the portal is officially open. Up until now it has been just a 1 way street with guys potentially exiting but from what I’ve heard we have a lot of interest and will be very aggressive. There are probably 3-4 guys entering that I would have preferred to keep (from the outside not knowing the situation) but the rest is just deep depth turnover.

I think normally Fran would prefer to keep more developmental guys at the bottom of the roster but the way this past season went the sense of urgency to recover has made it a little more cut throat.

Obviously some of these portal decisions may be based on Fran nudging them. I wonder if maybe some of the others are players expressing interest in portaling and Fran has said see what the portal is like? Maybe some of these players will ultimately come back?

These are million dollar questions. There are so many potential truths. Time will tell.

10-3
3-9
'Winning the NC' convo aside, his unique selling point is this culture of turning young boys into men, through Fran, Family, Football, & Faith. Its unique in that he actually lived the experiences he wants to give these kids. So, all of the space given to the non football side, I am a little surprised when the good ones leave.
Perhaps its all about the $$?
Perhaps its about winning?
Maybe we're better off without them?
Maybe we aren't?
Frans either captaining a sinking ship, OR he's in control & just navigating rough seas.
We won't really know until they step on the field.

Part of me is like, we were 3-9, so who cares who leaves? The other part gets concerned when these 4 stars who were very vocal about coming here for Frans culture , leave so easily.

I’d be concerned if they were the 25’s for cultural reasons The 24 class was just thrown together. The key is how the 25s and 26s do who were recruited by Fran for a while just to Syracuse. We’ve retained all the key guys from the 25 thus far. I think we will see Demetres and AD emerge as leaders on D next year.
