It looks like there are two buckets; basketball reference has stats for the regular season (56-% true shooting, more games) and something called the tip off tournament (fewer games, looks like your stats). Should probably combine the two and the regular season is more games. The link you sent is filtered to the tip off tournament only.

I’m just still going to be very skeptical of the Gerry pixie dust you just gotta look under the hood actually all the players he’s getting are way better than it looks. It’s just convenient that the guy we hired is super duper smart and all his players are gonna be way better and another guy we’re in the running for, all his players are worse than they look.

Good catch and I’m not at all looking at this as any pixie dust. So then Pate is their most efficient shooter then amongst a bunch that aren’t. My point is I don’t get the celebration over what PC is adding compared to what we are adding when you look at the numbers. The other guys I mentioned the numbers are accurate. Im looking at it objectively is all because I see all the fanfare around PC and their high rated portal class.

Here is the TS pct of the guys we are bringing in/returning

Dual- 54 pct
Tobiason - 60 pct
Wilson - 62 pct
Doty- 57 pct
Sadiq- 56 pct
Kiyan- 48 pct ( most concerning one of course but FT shooting hurt a lot here)
M3- no obvious data but should be high 50s to low 60s given other numbers
Siby - no data
Moesch - no data
Goodrick- 64 pct( only 9 games)
Folefac( assuming) - 58 pct

For a defensive minded team- outside of Kiyan those are impressive numbers to work with coming in from a shooting perspective. The kind of things that speak to looking at analytics and not just rankings to me.

If we add another lead guard with the rest of our war chest that’s up there as well that’s a smart well put together roster.

It’s concerning how bad the data analytics are here today. Not you specifically.

Plug the #’s into the AI tools that are free and it’ll kick out something that isn’t just vibes or cherry picked data.

AI is loaded with mistakes though too so just be careful trusting it too much

I have Pate at 54% true shooting combined, fwiw. Not great, not terrible. Also a higher level of play, especially compared to the guys we're bringing up from the lower levels of NCAA. (like, what do you think Doty at 57% in the MAAC translates to in the ACC? and yes I know he also can improve)

I also didnt say anything about Providence! But i understand what you're saying. I'm also just a little bit beaten down by the last, well, decade really. But it does seem like we at one point were sold we have all this money to spend with Gerry and now it appears to be more we're finding these diamonds in the rough from lower levels and Gerry knows exactly what to look for. And both of those things could be true! There are absolutely very good player at the lower levels who make the jump every year and are very good. And maybe Gerry really is this awesome coach who will get a lot out of these guys. But I have an incredible amount of skepticism.

Yep and I know you didn’t and didn’t mean to imply as much. A ton of programs are building rosters with high performing kids from mid major conferences and Europe which makes it harder to predict but also makes it harder to trust portal rankings too. A lot of P5 portal guys are guys unhappy or that struggled at previous stops or just chase money etc. I am 100 pct in camp lets see the product and go from there.

Gerry will be a HUGE difference maker as coach, he will get us extra posessions and win on the margins unlike our teams of the past few years who ran around like lost puppies.

So Gerry plus our players trying hard consistently should result in a few more wins...but we just need a few more pieces to put us in the mix of the top half of the ACC...

Im not in the mood for a rebuild...just add the pieces now.

This is kind of where I am right now. I see and read the concerns about the star power/proven high major guys on the roster. Hoping GMac can coach them up a bit and make them into an overachieving team.
