While I love and trust Dino I think this is a an over reaction to our lack of depth at DE. Moving Dunk makes tons of sense given his frame and lack of TE emphasis in this offense. However, Ruff doesn't have the body type to play DE. All of the sudden we have 8 DE's, yes all young, but I thought Ruff could start in the middle from day 1 and now this hurts his reps at LB.

I was wondering if this was a spring tryout thing since our numbers are low at DE until the frosh come in and the coaching staff has confidence he can go back to mlb fairly seamlessly?

His weight and size scream DE. It may be temp depending on what they see from the other young guys.

Yah, isn't he 260+. That's not linebacker size, unless he's a complete freak.

I thought all along the staff would shave 10 lbs off him and improve his speed to be ideal at lb. He does not have ideal size for a DE. DE's need to be long, strong, and disruptive. Unless he is Freeny 2.0 and can get under OT's pads, this isnt a good move.

A

240 LB coming out of HS though...and with that neck, tells me he can bulk up.

Let players play...
I might be wrong, but I think I heard Matt Park say he was 260 when TWC did the "national signing day" special.

You can tell this by looks and size. Just give it shot, let him play the spot first. He might just surprise you.

Just wanted to see him kill it at LB , be all in on his system and assignments from the get go.

I hear ya. But I think this kid will kill it anywhere he lines up...true baller.

I rather have him as a very athletic and powerful DE then have him struggle making plays in space at MLB. You dont see 260 lb MLB's any more. Its very hard to run at that weight sideline to sideline the whole game and not get sloppy with your technique and tackling. Keeping weight off is harder. I rather add weight to a very athletic kid like Armstrong and put him in the middle along with his work ethic and instincts. Kuechly is an example. He was a safety in HS

Hmmmm Dwight Freeney 6'1" and 260 lbs
Kenneth Ruff 6'1" and 258 lbs as a freshman

Definitely doesn't have the body type...

Donnie Simmons was 1 inch taller than Ruff with around the same weight as a 5th year senior. Guessing that Ruff has room to grow and pretty much has outgrown MLB before he even has landed on campus.

Good point money, but I guess I envisioned him shaving 10-20 lbs to be able to play in space. The LB position has changed before our eyes in the last 5 years. Backers need to be smaller and run sideline to sideline and play in space!

Im not gonna lie. I wanted him at MLB too. Was hoping he could fill in there. Slide Zaire to SLB and Bennett to WLB. That would be something. It would have been a nice change up from the size we had at LB in the past but when I saw him come in at that weight I figured the staff would move him. Atleast for now.

Good points. People seem to forget that 3-4 OLB's are really pass rushing DE's. People like Von Miller and Ware destroy O lineman at their size.

Only question is how quick he is off the ball at his size. Freeney was blindingly fast off the ball with his first step. Haven't ever seen too many faster or more powerful at his size.

Freeny was a freak for his size type. Not sure if we will see again lol

One of the coaches tweeted that Armstrong was the future at MLB.

I kind of read into Ruffs tweet "I'll be starting at DE" as, the coaching staff will start practice with him as DE, not that he is 100% permanently switching positions.

I'm anxious to see what the RS Frosh LB's Cullen and Henderson can contribute.

My guess is that he puts on 20-25 lbs in his first 1-2 years in the S&C program.
The kid is a player...one of the most impressive films in the recruiting class.

If he can get to 225-230 lbs, combined with his instincts and athletic ability, I think he could be a very good MLB. With that said, these same traits translate very well as an OLB or even safety if he can't put the weight on.
