Run and stop the run is idiotic

We need to have multiple RB's who can run, our highest scoring teams had more then 1 running back. 1998, and 2018, would take a McNabb or Dungey with these receivers. A Konrad, McIntosh, Neal, Strickland, and Howard. Both those years averaged 42 points a game.
That's the kind d of offense you want with a good defense.
We lost games in the 90’s because we were meatheads and tried to run too much. Those teams underachieved against opponents we should have beat.

Not advocating meathead football, 2018 we threw a lot, and that needs to continue, but need to be able to run when it's needed, which this year we can't.

He's more ruggedly handsome than adorable anyway. Joshie is adorable

8-3 being 55th in yards per pass, 129th in yards per rush, 50th in yards per pass defense, and 118th in rushing defense

Why are we 8-3? We throw 60% of the time and our opponents throw 50% of the time

Don't run and don't stop the run makes more sense. Would be best to be good at everything of course but throw decent and throw a lot is a recipe for being pretty good

You won't go undefeated this way, I agree. But bc was just a clunker throwing the ball, typical passing gives us a chance in a shootout

McCord is not really much different on 3rd down than any other down. We are 40th in passer rating on third down (1st in attempts)- we are also 40th on first down (2nd in attempts) 81st on second down (first in attempts)

We are 101st in 3rd and ten+, it's not like we are great situationally. 58th in 3rd and 7-9 to go. 57th in 3rd and 4-6 to go

We are 81st in passer rating on second down and first in attempts on second down

There is no situation where we excel other than 3rd and 1-3 to go where we are 16th best and throw the most.

90% of this is just throwing a lot
This is your wheelhouse. Thanks for taking the time to research, analyze, and post this data.

My take on that is McCord+Volume+Nixon = 8-3 with a roster that is probable not 8-3. Hopefully, the staff attempts to replicate that formula. Finding McCord-like QBs is the wildcard here. We can replicate the other 2 variables in that equation.

Fran has been, and continues to be, very emphatic about building a program that asserts it will and toughness by running the ball and stopping the run. Hopefully, the success this year while being very bad at yards per rush (129th) and rushing defense (118th) has provided a model of what could work at Syracuse while he attempts to build the program to his "ideal."

Not only finding another McCord, but we will need to find another Nixon within the next few years. IMO we have 0-2 years left with him. Nebraska does have an opening after all.

Beyond the numbers, I think McCord is unique with the types of throws he has been able to make to generate them. If we can get McCords every year, then we can keep doing what we're doing. If not, I hope we can adapt to our QBs skillset. If we had an even mediocre running game, our close wins turn into blowouts and at least 1 of ouŕ losses becomes a win. We'd be a top 20 team.

Yeah, I view a good running game as a tool to help your passing offense. Helps you stay out of 3rd and long situations where the defense can tee off the pash rush and throw exotic coverages behind it.

Not disagreeing that passing the ball is more important, but if we want to be a true conference contender we have to aim to be good in all phases. Or at least, good enough in all phases

Not only is it his throws but also his decision making. Can we find a guy who can make those passes AND correctly read the coverage AND make the right choice on an RPO AND that Fran trusts enough to pass it on 4th down? Take away any of those and this season is very different.

Technically the stats are correct, but the reality is that many of our passes take the place of the run

I don’t think Nixon is taking another college OC job. NFL or college HC.

Yes but those are run substitutes by fast guys far away from murderous fat guys.

The second half Saturday backs up what you said

Game should've been a blowout and we stupidly insisted on being PhYsiCal

There are lots of times I think they didn't really know why they are good. But they the game ends and they throw more than anyone and I think should I really be mad that they aren't in first place on attempts by more...

Shrader's senior year passer rating is better than Mccord's 143 to 141 believe it or not

McCord's gift is throwing for a 141 rating every game

Shrader was much higher variance
QBR does not value volume at all

If I throw 10 easy passes to wide open people its better than 40 hard passes to covered WRs.

It rewards results that does not reflect how well you throw.

You can throw a 1 yd hitch and the DB falls down and the WR runs 80 yds and it looks great but not reall much the QB did.

The more you throw the harder it is. Kinda like the inverse of running where the more you run often the easier it gets.

Where this offense has failed the last few games was getting in for TDs when running helps.
Not just those last 10 yds. But being able to run inside the 30 so we get that FD to get that chance to throw more passes.

What we have found a way to do is move the chains with the run most of the time we needed to between the 30s.
