bad for two days out of the gate, I think they made a nice move here, red shirt the kid and Morris is he isn't going to get 5-6 carries a game. Wish AAM had been red shirted

Yes, makes sense. But, what if Run DMC turns out to be the best RB on the roster?

If he can get 5-6 carries per then play him, I just hate the skiddish use of frosh running backs, play the kid, commit to using him work through a few growing pains or RS the kid. make a gd decision and stick to it, worse than my 9 year old daugher when it comes to sports she wants to play

I say RUN DMC, he may help on specials too this year and thefore may be worth burning the shirt. He seems to be a versatile athlete although Morris seems to have more upside from what is being tossed around

What they did with AAM last year was a disaster, Just my opinion

I say run one of the freshman either on specials or in mop up duty, and RS the other. No reason to redshirt two freshman backs in the same year

total waste of a year

It sure was. Which is why it is encouraging that we're getting to the point on offense where the incoming talent can be redshirted for the most part, to maximize their value as long term assets to the team.

Wasn't Moore injured after he initially played? If so, then the burning of his red shirt wasn't totally within the coach's control.

we havent had the luxury of redshirting kids... the cupboard was pretty bare, last year after gulley got hurt, we had 3 backs, 2 if you redshirted moore

That sums up my view pretty well too.

Yes. The RS argument about AAM shows up from time to time, but doesn't make a lot of sense. There was nothing behind Bailey last season after Gulley was hurt. To help the offense, coaches got AAM and Smith into the mix, and -- bad luck -- both got hurt.
By the time we get to 2015, there should be talent at RB better than AAM.

As for Morris and McFarlane, too many unknowns at this stage to carve any RS decisions into stone. Lots of teams use 4 or 5 RBs over the course of a season (including specials).

When you consider special teams both kids may be to valuable to redshirt.

total waste of a year
yes we know , you've said it a thousand times, and you sound kinda like, like me doing it but its ok when i do, and by doing it i mean saying the same things about the same player , even thou i agree with you :D

They must have played AAM because they were reading all your preseason hype.
Phat your back:) Lets hope that the coaches have learned from last years on the job training. I wish that we would have Red Shirted Hack last year

thats exactly what i blame it on, a more experienced marrone would of rs aam, no doubt, atleast i would hope.

It makes a lot of sense, actually--especially because the kid wasn't in the proper physical condition to contribute. I don't hold an injury against the kid or the coaching staff, though--as stated above, that's out of anyone's control.

I'm just tired of burning that initial year of eligibility Johnny Morant style for very little payoff. I know that depth considerations, needs on ST, etc. have forced the coaches to plays some guys before they've been ready. But I'd much rather have that fifth year of eligibility, when a player is experienced and physically mature, than the meager contributions they are capable of making as true frosh.

We're almost at that point with all positional units, which is great to see.

At least we're to the point now where people are talking about how redshirting is generally a good strategy, as opposed to a few years back when people were talking about how playing all of our freshmen was the master plan all along.

Redshirting, not redshirting Moore, who cares.

At least one, if not both, Morris and McFarland are going to see the field this year. The team still needs to upgrade speed, and both do that. I hope replaces Gully on the depth chart.

The current RB's were recruited over by these guys, and you hope Edwards and Smith are better than the new guys. Keep upgrading talent, and make the kids on the roster fight for jobs.

Does anyone really know the conversations that went on regarding playing AAM last year?
Maybe he was promised a shot at playing when he was being recruited.
Maybe the staff thought it was worth the gamble and it simply failed to pay off.
Maybe they just wanted to start the clock on his eligibility to show him how much he needed to work on.

Redshirt him this year then he'll be caught up for all of you who wanted him redshirted last year. If Marrone wants to have 4 backs in rotation, after the injuries, there was no choice but to play AAM. Yes, it sucks, but hopefully with depth growing, that won't be an issue moving forward. Most likely, it'll still happen from time to time.

I agree with your post above--recruiting is definitely heading in the right direction. It's been a slower upgrade at some positions over others [OL, WR, RB], but we're right on the cusp of seeing the benefit of improved depth / quality all over the field.

One thing from your post I picked upon: you referenced Smith [Laray] -- is he in the fold?

Not yet, but I think we are leading. I understand the draw of Oregon, but man are they loaded, he has to take that into account.

I'm a tad hesitant to call McFarlane Run DMC, as that nickname is already taken by some other running back.

Anyway, does Devante have the best speed of our RBs? Seems like he could be given a shot at punt returner, particularly with Rene injured. If he can make a Spotwood (pre-knee injury) type impact there, it's totally worth burning his redshirt.

Really depends if they offer and how serious he is about track... if he thinks he can run track there it's a no brainer well at least for a lot of people it would be
