Ryan Cabiles Canned / Robert Harris new Director of S&C

The key is they have a new leader in the weight room and they all seem to be buying in. It’s a total culture change and for the better. If you can get the entire team to buy in it becomes a routine players will accept and enjoy the visible improvements. Kudos to Red who saw a need for change. It couldn’t have been easy to dismiss a guy who was part of the program for years.

Just a random thought this morning. We're giving Cabiles alot of credit, but I'm not so sure there's not a team leader already in that weight room.

May be someone we're not expecting.

It's not hard to dismiss a guy who should have been dismissed years ago. Our guys got pushed around for too many years even by teams like Colgate.

I think Red looked at what Fran did with his culture change. They probably talked and then Red knew he needed to make changes.
This could very well bring us back to the 80's and early 90's when we were great in both.
And in a couple of years we will be the school everyone wants. We have been there, and unlike anyone else in our conference we've been great in both sports.

Chris Bell, Carlos were not going to push guys are around. Davis was a nice pice he was solid

We also needed to change our strength and conditioning program to a new playing style. You have to be bigger, stronger and quicker to play man vs zone. Totally different body types. I’m not saying our new body type can’t play zone, but long, skinny guys aren’t going to be as effective playing man.

Regardless of style, we needed to be stronger. Our best teams under JB always had some physical players on them. Jeremy McNeil was a strong 250 lbs, Onuaku, Rick Jackson, Christmas were all physical strong guys. And that was just the more modern era.

I don't think JB pushed for guys to change their bodies though. If a guy was naturally big and strong, great. If not...

Rony and DC were strong, Billy and LeRon Ellis, Dave Johnson those guys didn't get pushed around by Georgetown.

I'll challenge this a little bit. For the longest time the SU program was big on loyalty and continuity even as the evidence for change mounted. Cabiles was the S&C guy for Red's whole time as assistant and first two years as HC. I agree that he should have been dismissed years ago but if it was really easy to do it would have been done earlier, IMO.

Yep. I didn't go back that far for a few reasons, but we definitely were able to play physical back then.

Those guys tended to be exceptions. There’s a reason we struggled against Pitt and Louisville even when we were great. Our forwards routinely got pushed around against those schools.

You're probably right about the loyalty and continuity aspect, that's why I wanted a coach from outside the program. However, a head coach has to make tough decisions from time to time and evaluate what's working and what needs improvement. We've got Red now and hopefully he is a quick learner.

I really hope Red adds another assistant. It’s mystifying why he hasn’t done that this offseason after adding this new S&C coach. I’d love to see us hire a smart young offensive mastermind. At this point, why don’t they just hire Devo even? He would at least bring some more toughness to the team and he knows his stuff. I think he’d be a great recruiter and motivator and could become a player development coach.

It's true, there were teams that had a culture of physicality that would beat us up, but that's kind of my point. We used to have some guys that were physical by their nature but getting stronger and more physical wasn't necessarily something that was a point of emphasis by the staff. When we stopped either trying to or were unable to recruit those types of guys, the S&C didn't mold the guys we had and we got softer. It was a tough pill to swallow after growing up watching DC and Seikaly abuse most other teams.

Absolutely. Our troubles rebounding were partially due to scheme, but far more often we just got big boyed by certain schools that just had far more physical players.

Just a thought but this may be trickier than you think. This is a make or break year for the program. There may not be a lot good assistant coaches too interested in relocating up to CNY for 1 year. If things go south they’re gonna get chucked out with the Autry and the rest of the staff.

I’m with you though. It’s absurd that a lot of programs are running with double the staff we have.

There are plenty of assistant coaches that would take a step up from a mid-major for one season at this level. Regardless of the risk.

Question. Is there a specific training goal around running this at 9:00 PM, or could it just be facilities availability

Much cooler. The Dome was all set up for the strength and conditioning workout.

Give me all the Robert Harris videos…

S&C is finally a priority for men’s hoops!

These workout videos are doing more to reel me back in and get me excited for this season than any other offseason content in recent years. The previous years felt unenthusiastic by comparison, like they were just going through the motions.
