Sounds like he did commit this weekend. Welcome aboard Ryan!

Good to see. Obviously, we need to improve all facets of ST. If that involves offering scholarships to K, P, LS, etc. to help improve the foundation, I'm good with it.

Good stuff!!! He does have one hell of a leg! Welcome aboard Ryan!

About a two first down difference/advantage for the defense now on every kick0ff situation. Can only help.

RT @zogsport7 After his official visit over weekend, Garden City kicker Ryan Norton verbally committed to Syracuse.

Should immediately be able to help the Special Teams unit in some capacity. Like the pick-up

Norton will kick for Syracuse

Ryan Norton of Garden City, a first-team Newsday All-Long Island kicker in 2011, has verbally committed to Syracuse, his father Mike told Newsday on Sunday.
Norton, who set the Trojans’ record for career kicking points and had 45 touchbacks last season, is expected to be the Orange’s kickoff specialist next season as well as compete for the primary placekicking job with Ross Krautman, a sophomore...

Marrone will be sticking with Krautman, because Coach puts a high emphasis on guys who have proven themselves, but after seeing Ross go through that bit of a swoon last year.... I would not be shocked if this guy was our FG kicker by year's end.

I wonder if this will be the "kick-off" to the flood of commits like we had this time last year?!? sigh:oops:
O' where have you gone Matt Alkire?

Back in the fall the staff was looking at four kickers. The goal was to find one who could not only kick the ball deep, but one who could give the coverage team a 4.5 or better hang time.

It is always a dilemma whether or not to offer a kicker a scholarship. We were probably a quality kickoff man away from going to a second straight bowl game. A $50,000 scholarship would be well spent if young Mr. Norton can help the staff fulfill the expectations they have for the position. I think it's worth the gamble.

Last year our specials were horrific on kickoffs and it was due in large part to the low and inaccurate kickoffs. We all remember all too well the kicks that went out of bounds giving our opponents the ball at the 40, grrrrrr.

The philosophy was to keep the ball between the left hash and sideline so that the coverage team knew where to head. We didn't have a kicker on the team that could do that and keep it in bounds all of the time nor one who could kick it deep or with decent hang time. We were very easy to game plan for in this department.

I would expect when Ryan Norton signs on the dotted line that Shane Raupers will resume his progression toward matriculation full speed ahead.

I think his swoon was due more to poor poor line play, he was forced to rush kicks, had a few blocked, too.

The swoon was started when Ross suffered a pulled groin, then as most competitors do, said he was good to go too soon. The previous year and up until the injury Krautman was among the best young kickers in America.

Raupers wasn't on scholarship, although I believe that we have Lichy for 1 more year.

Agreed, my post was more pro-quality of punters and kickers we are stockpiling than anything close to anti-Ross.

You could totally see the effects on the KOs, that is for sure.

Huge pick up, we literally had no D1 kickoff specialist on the roster this past year or for the last 5 years for that matter. Ross is our FG Kicker and a dame good one but this kid should be kicking off from day 1

Keep in mind, that in HS the ball is kicked from the 40 and in college the 30. So none of his kicks in the 60's would reach the end zone. Hopefully being a year older and stronger in the fall, he will consistently kick the 70+ yarders in his film. If he does, he could be the best kick off guy in the country. #1 last year was at 68.8 yards per kickoff. But we don't know how many were intentionally kicked short. The key is probably touchbacks and the same guy who led (Auburns kicker) in yardage led in touchback percentage at 58%. He will also need to improve his hang time.

best thing that could happen to su would be college going to the NFL rule on kickoffs.
