Sam Perkins

The former UNC star center, (from the Michael Jordan Era), was on "Centers of Attention", the ESPN radio show in Syracuse with Rosey Bouie, Etan Thomas and Danny Schayes today. Back in the early 80's, (the Leo Rautins Era), Syracuse had a team not unlike this one: a good offensive, subpar defensive teams with a "donut" line-up: a hole in the center. Andre Hawkins, a 6-7 power forward was trying to be the center. Jim Boeheim has long bemoaned an inability to recruit Sam Perkiins to fill that hole. He was the Isaiah Stewart of his time.

The story that was told at the time was that Perkins went to UNC because they gave not only him a scholarship but also his girlfriend and SU wouldn't give one to the girlfriend. Sam told his version today. He went on his official visit and was supposed to be escorted by Eric Santifer and Tony bruin but they told him that they had dates with their girlfriends and left him on his own. He said he just wandered around and wound up in the training room where Rosey and Eddie Moss were having a food fight. He didn't blame JB, who he said "had no awareness" of what was going on, (or not going on). They didn't have selfies back then but the result was the same.

That is an amazing story! I remember how disappointed I was when I heard he wasn’t coming here. The same way I felt when Sam Bowie chose Kentucky. Karma is a bitch for the Tar Heels.

kerins wasn't in the same class with Addison and Alexis. Sean graduated in 1984 Wendell and Raf graduated in 86

SU also could not promise the same "special" classes for athletes that UNC had.
