It's been a few years now, but I used to travel to San Jose frequently on business. Here are a few of my old favorites for your consideration:

Il Fornaio - really good Italian restaurant in the St. Pierre Hotel, across the street from the San Jose Convention Center.

One of the original Gordon Birsch microbreweries is located here, too, also not far from the arena.

For steakhouses, try either Arcadia or Morton's. Here's the link to a review of Arcadia:

And finally, for a great burger, a menu with variety and solid Italian food, check out Original Joe's, also located conveniently close to the arena.

The Fairmount Hotel is a lovely hotel that is located within walking distance, too.

You got it right, Matt, those are the top spots. Except you missed the best steak house, Henry's Hi-Life, a hole in the wall that's been there forever, known only to locals. It's in an old broken down house in an old broken down part of town but just behind the arena. Here's a link: http://www.henryshilife.com/

Still, the best of the bunch by far is Original Joe's, a landmark chop house. Been going there since the early 70s, place has a NYC feel to it, serves until 1 am, impossible to get a table at regular dinner hours but worth the wait.

It's settled; ACC Conf Tourney finds a perm. home

Me, too, Manley. I used to eat at Original Joe's with my Notre Dame buddy (since passed way) about once a week. Some of the best eggplant parmigiana I've ever eaten.

There's also an excellent rib joint in San Jose. Can't recall its name.

I've been to SJ and the area several times for work, too, and can add a few more things of interest:

A few years ago, after a conference, I walked over to Iquanas right near/on the SJSt. campus. They have the burrito from Man vs Food. On tv, it looked like this huge place. In reality, they had about a 10x15 order side and a few tables, maybe 4-5 of them, to sit and it. It was good...nothing amazing but if you like that show, take a look.

They have a neat river walk place where I'd run in the morning...you can pick it up most places in the city and goes about 7 miles out or so to the airport. It was real strange the first time I ran it because it was near dawn and running under some overpasses and seeing all the homeless waking up. It startled the heck out of me the first time. At that point, I didn't realize Calif was so lax with allowing homeless to loiter.

The Winchester house is out there, too. If you haven't been, or heard of, take a google of it.

Last, the area is really neat if you have a few days extra for vac. Just 50 mins north and you're in San Fran, cross the bridge and into some real neat redwoods. About 50 mins south of SJ, you're into some other cool spots like Santa Cruz, down toward monterey, etc...
