How Vunerable Are Major Programs to the HC Leaving? (si.com; Glockner)

In a sport so heavily dominated by and influenced by coaches, every program is susceptible to some degree when it comes to coaching transition. Even the very bluest of blueblood programs — North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Arizona — have had at least an occasional season or two with the wrong guy in charge leading to very disappointing campaigns. Only Kansas (Roy Williams to Bill Self) and Duke (Mike Krzyzewski) have pretty much remained unscathed, thanks in large part to a combined one change over three decades (and Kansas finding one of the best coaches in the nation as a replacement)...

I'm glad Brennan's story about new rivalries starts with Syracuse-Duke, but he should have stuck to the basketball part. He tries to paint the two schools as vastly different off the court, but in fact they are more similar than dissimilar. Both are relatively small, private research universities in a conference mostly dominated by giant state schools. Both are highly ranked national universities (obviously Duke is much higher, but SU is still top 60). Though he tries to make the student bodies sound dissimilar, Duke is 90% out of state, SU is 60%, and SU is in a much larger state. In fact, one of the things I like about the ACC move is that, on the non-athletics side, SU is a much better fit with Duke than with the UConns and Rutgers on the one hand, or the Seton Halls and Depauls on the other.
