SCHEDULE CHANGE: ACC Play For 'Cuse Kicks Off At Virginia Tech

Syracuse will look to take down the Hokies who are receiving votes in both polls

SCHEDULE CHANGE: The first game of tomorrow's doubleheader will now begin at 2:00 p.m., instead of 1:00 p.m.

BLACKSBURG, Va. –
Syracuse (7-8) opens up ACC play on the road against a formidable opponent in Virginia Tech (13-3). The teams will play a total of three games over the course of the weekend, starting with a double header on Saturday, March 7 with the first pitch set for 2:00 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday, March 8, with the final game starting at 12:00 p.m.

The Orange is coming off of a 3-2 performance in the Mary Nutter Classic, and has seen success recently against Virginia Tech, leading the all-time series 9-4. Last season the Orange split their four game series with the Hokies which included a thrilling ACC Tournament matchup in which Syracuse trailed by just one run in the top of the sixth inning.

Danielle Chitkowski gave the Hokies lots of problems over the course of their series last season, batting an impressive .515 with four doubles and five runs batted in.

The Hokies are receiving votes in both the Coaches and the ESPN poll, but are coming off of a two game losing streak after falling to North Carolina in a double header on Monday, March 2.

The Last Time Out's Highlights
Julie Wambold knocked in four runs and recorded five hits, giving her 12 RBI's on the season. One of her five base knocks was a walk-off single scoring Sammy Fernandez to defeat Loyola Marymount in the first game of the weekend for the Orange.

Jocelyn Cater pitched a total of 18 innings, retiring 19 opposing hitters by way of the K to give her 72 strikeouts on the season. Her 72 strikeouts give her the third most strikeouts in the ACC in just the fifth most innings pitched this season (55.2). She's been nearly untouchable this season, averaging an astounding 9.05 strikeouts per seven innings with a 2.85 earned run average.

The two pitchers ahead of her are Lacey Waldrop (94) of No. 12/11 Florida State and Allyson Frei (87) of Boston College. However, the two have pitched at least 15 innings more than Cater. Frei has thrown 81 innings and has retired 87 by strikeout while Waldrop has thrown 70.2 with 94 strikeouts thus far.

Corinne Ozanne continued to swing a heavy bat, sending three runners home for a team leading 14 RBI's this season and recording her eighth home run.
Eight of Ozanne's 14 hits this season have landed on the other side of the outfield fence. Her eighth home run ties her for the conference lead with Virginia Tech's Kelsey Mericka.

Ozanne's power has resulted in as many runs batted in as she has hits and the bottom of the lineup has done its job, scoring her 10 times this season. Her success at the plate has forced opponents to pitch around her, giving her nine walks and three times in which she's been hit by a pitch.

Sammy Fernandez was efficient at the plate, as usual. She recorded four hits and scored four runs, giving her a team leading, .380 batting average, 19 hits and 13 runs scored in 2015. She scored the walk-off run against Loyola Marymount.

Mary Dombrowski had a solo jack against Northwestern to give the Orange a 1-0 lead. The home run was a difference maker as Syracuse grinded out a 2-1 victory.

Maddi Doane scored three runs and had three hits in California, giving her 12 and 15 on the season. Her production came at crucial moments as she scored two runs and recorded two hits and a double in the walk-off win against Loyola Marymount, including a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to keep the Orange alive, kick starting the two-out rally that gave Syracuse the 4-3 victory.

Doane currently ranks in the top three for the Orange in 11 of the major offensive stat categories, including a team leading six doubles and one triple out of the leadoff spot.

Sydney O'Hara enjoyed her success at the plate, picking up three hits, a double, four runs batted in and a runs scored. Two of her hits and RBI came in the 6-0 victory against Nevada. She also contributed two innings of shutout ball shut the door on the Wolfpack and give Syracuse its first shutout of the season.

Bosch aims for success with Syracuse pitching staff after 2-year hiatus from team

By Liam SullivanStaff Writer

When former assistant coach Jenna Caira told Leigh Ross that she wouldn’t be coming back to Syracuse for the 2015 season, the head coach didn’t know who was going to coach her pitchers.

One of her former assistants, Mike Bosch, happened to be in town and asked her out to lunch shortly after Caira’s announcement.

While Bosch and Ross were talking over lunch, all Ross could think about was bringing him back to Syracuse to coach her pitching staff once again. Smart and savvy, Bosch was the perfect person for the job.

Three or four days later, Ross called Bosch before any other candidate and offered him his old job back. He accepted, and returned to the team whose pitching staff set program single-season records for wins, strikeouts, shutouts, opponent batting average and earned run average in 2011. Now he’s trying to replicate that success.

“It was good timing for me and obviously it’s a place I’m familiar with and love,” Bosch said. “I have the chance to make an impact here.”

When Bosch left after the 2012 season, he became the National Softball Director for Frozen Ropes, Inc. and a volunteer assistant coach at Minnesota State.

He was responsible for the supervision of softball instruction at 20 Frozen Ropes Facilities, seeing 40–50 pitchers a week in his nine months with the company.

“When you have seen a mass number of all different types of kids and pitchers, you see things that are going right and wrong for them,” Bosch said. “Since I’ve been back, I’ve applied that and started using more video in analysis of pitchers too. I believe that if you’re the same coach a year from now that you are now, you’re doing a disservice to yourself.”

A former head coach at Iowa Lakes Community College for 13 years where he coached 28 All-Americans and 81 All-Region players, Bosch has a lot of experience coaching, especially with pitchers.

Using that experience, Syracuse’s pitching staff has a combined ERA of 3.12 this season, improving on last season’s 5.02 mark. Ross said that there is a confidence with the pitchers that is different than last season.

She added that Bosch’s biggest strength as a coach is his knack for adjusting to each pitcher’s ability, technique and learning style. Rather than changing a pitcher’s mechanics, Bosch focuses on making small tweaks that don’t force pitchers to abandon the delivery they are comfortable with.

“I just like how he doesn’t change me as a pitcher or my mechanics,” said pitcher Sydney O’Hara. “He’ll focus on small things like moving our fingers on the ball, but he doesn’t try to change our windup or things like that.”

There is a level of comfort that Bosch’s coaching style gives to Syracuse’s pitchers, a comfort that has helped on the mound, Ross said.

O’Hara and Bosch, who had trained together while the sophomore pitcher was still in high school, have really focused on her mechanics. O’Hara said she’s kind of a jerky pitcher, and that Bosch’s work with strengthening her leg drive has helped her increase her speed.

With such a qualified and capable pitching coach, Ross is free to focus on other areas of her team. The two talk frequently, but Bosch handles day-to-day pitching responsibilities and calls the pitches from the dugout during games.

Ross said its relieving having someone she can trust to do his job and do it well.

“I’m big on surrounding myself with people who make us better. He does that,” Ross said. “He brings so much to the program that it wouldn’t have made sense to not ask him back.”

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In its conference opener, Syracuse (7-10, 0-2 ACC) fell to Virginia Tech (15-3, 2-2) in both games. The Hokies, who're receiving votes in both national polls, defeated the Orange 10-2 in six innings the first game and slighted 'Cuse, 2-0 in a pitcher's duel in the latter game.

Jocelyn Cater's performance in the second game was the highlight of the day as she showed why she's one of the best to take the circle in the ACC.

"Joc (Jocelyn Cater) threw one of her best games so far this year. She gave us every opportunity to have a chance to win but we weren't able to give her any run support. Although its tough to lose a game like that, she only gave up two hits to a very good Virginia Tech team." Head coach Leigh Ross said, "She's really developing into a great leader in the circle for us."

Syracuse vs. Virginia Tech Game Two | 2-0, Loss

The Highlights
Jocelyn Cater threw six innings, striking out 10 while allowing just one walk and two hits. One of which was a game-deciding home run that would jam most hitters.
Sammy Fernandez reached on an infield single to break up Virginia Tech's no-hitter. The hit was her 20th this season.

The Duel
In what was the definition of a pitcher's duel, Jocelyn Cater was dominant. The junior threw five scoreless innings before Virginia Tech scored their only two runs of the game in the sixth.

Syracuse was held to one hit in the game. It's best chance came in the sixth when Sammy Fernandez slapped a ball to the second baseman and beat the throw for an infield single in the sixth. The single brought Syracuse's RBI leader, Corinne Ozanne, to the plate with two outs. However, after Virginia Tech's Kelly Heinz fell behind, 3-0, she battled back to get Ozanne and hold the Orange scoreless.

After hitting the first batter to put the leadoff Hokie on, Cater fought for two outs. One pitch away from silencing Virginia Tech for the sixth straight inning, Kylie McGoldrick inside-outed a pitch that most wouldn't be able to touch and sent it over the left-center wall to give her team the only two runs it needed to defeat the Orange.

Syracuse didn't have an answer in the seventh, giving Virginia Tech its second win of the day by a 2-0 score.

Syracuse vs. Virginia Tech Game One | 10-2, Loss

The Highlights
Sammy Fernandez recorded her 14th run of the season.
Corinne Ozanne recorded her 15th RBI of the season on a double and later scored her 11th run of the year.
Sydney O'Hara helped herself in the first, scoring Ozanne on a single for her seventh RBI of the season.
Annie Toczynski recorded her first career single.
Rachel Burkhardt made two key plays in right to hold off the Hokies from scoring and rocketed a single up the middle for her second career hit.

The Blow-By-Blow
The Orange kicked off the first picking up two quick runs after Fernandez reached on an error by the first baseman. Ozanne stepped up to the plate and doubled to left field, bringing Fernandez around to score the first run of the game. O'Hara followed up with a single up the middle to score Ozanne, giving 'Cuse a 2-0 lead.

O'Hara held the Hokies at bay until they tagged her for three runs, two of which were earned. Virginia Tech worked the bases loaded with no outs and a walk brought in its first run of the game. An error on a blooper to left brought in the tying run and a walk by the ensuing batter gave Tech the lead. Key plays by Maddi Doane and Rachel Burkhardt put an end to the inning limiting the damage to three runs.

Two innings later, Virginia Tech struck again with a five-run fourth sparked by a leadoff home run. Back-to-back walks following the home run opened the door for Lindsey Larkin to relieve O'Hara, but two consecutive first-pitch singles and a ground out gave the Hokies a 7-2 lead. O'Hara snagged a line drive for the second but Tech wouldn't be retired without adding one more on a single up the middle, giving Virginia Tech an 8-2 advantage.

Syracuse picked up back-to-back singles in the top of the fifth by Burkhardt and Annie Toczynski but two nice plays by Tech's infielders on the right side silenced the Orange. Defensive misplay by the Orange led to Virginia Tech scoring the two runs it needed to finish the game and defeat Syracuse, 10-2.
