Schertz: how close were we?

No idea. I think the other two were closer to it than me. It felt a little Hail Mary-ish to me, but I think he purposely didn’t sign his contract until we parted ways.
Thanks Jake. A reason I'm raising this q is I saw someone (not sure who, but not someone who has ever really had info) post in one of the threads that we were very close and it was only prevented by a significant re-up offer to him by SLU - found that... interesting

Feels like the likeliest scenario is that Schertz used Cuse to maximize his leverage with SLU. But only those in the room truly know what happened. He's a great coach. I think he'll be very successful in the P4 soon. He does have to replace his most integral player though with Avila.

I need to point out that i have no idea.

Alright, decided this topic needs a standalone thread now that we're in the hindsight phase.
dasher Jake Cuse2023 any others who had intel-
How close were we to actually landing Schertz?

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

What I'll say is that people should be very excited about ADBB. I've mentioned it before, but he was on top of things from the day he was brought on. And to be honest, something that I was wrong initially about was that the search was going to be a collaborative decision. Blair was fully in control of this, and he wasn't going to hire Gerry without first trying to pull a huge fish. He really pushed all his chips in last week.

But I do not think that Schertz ever really wanted to be the coach at Syracuse. Nevertheless, it wasn't because there wasn't a compelling offer on the table.

thanks for this!

I think our effort was 100% sincere and was solid. We even tried twice after being told no the first time which tells me we really upped our offer. Now, on Schertz's side, how close did we really come? Only Schertz really knows that. Remember that when I was told that it was down to Schertz and Gerry, that came from the Schertz side.

this is exactly the vibe i got. i do feel ADBB wanted gerry. i do not get the sense at all this was some forced decision that he had nothing to do with. i think ADBB is a fundraiser/NIL guy at heart and correctly assessed that gerry would bring in the most NIL support. but he wanted to go through a process and i do think the schertz interest was legit.

You also can't rule out whether Schertz ultimately felt he couldn't take the job in good faith given GMAC's rise over the last month including the level his team was playing at over the last month and the unity that was forming around his candidacy among the power players at Syracuse. As a coach, do you want to be constantly compared to the up and comer coach in GMAC who they passed over for you at his alma mater? It's a crazy path how we arrived here at GMAC, but we are here. Syracuse happened to have an in family option that was very intriguing, turned around a once mid major giant in Siena, and generally is very highly thought of in the coaching world. A legend of College Basketball. I think the patience level and general unconditional support for GMAC is going to be much different than it was for Autry. People really liked Autry, people love and respect GMAC. Just a different vibe now.

It’s interesting that the contract was officially signed today. I have to think there was mutual interest as others have reported. Probably not enough to entice him.

Cuse2023 I do have a follow up. Was ADBB not that into Hodgson then or was he the first choice but other things behind the scenes as already mentioned is what forced BH away?

thanks as always mr.dasher, best of luck with that podcast!

I think close, and had we had more time I think we would have had Schertz. Time was of the essence and we could not take the risk to of upseeting Gerry and loisng him. Then what? Also, not sure what the NIL was for Schertz.

Respectfully, I think the sentiment is absurd

You hire anyone else who you think could be good-PMJ, Calhoun etc.
