In my mind, Scoop's a top 5 SU PG.

Here's my list.

Pearl
Douglas
G-Mac
Hart
Scoop

He leaves as #6 on our assist list only behind those four and Adrian Autry. He's easily the best PG we've had post G-Mac and if you look at his overall body of work, his heart and leadership speak for themselves.

I think Scoop also gets bonus points in my book for being part of a SU "renaissance" after a mediocre few seasons and consecutive NIT berths. He was a part of two BE regular season champion teams, and the heart and soul of the most successful regular season in program history.

I'm interested to hear other people's thoughts about his legacy, and where he stacks up with other SU all-time floor generals.

I haven't looked at Scoop's # when matched up against these four, but he's easily the best PG we've had post G-Mac and if you look at his overall body of work, his heart and leadership speak for themselves.

Autry belongs on that list, IMO.

Possibly Flynn?

In my love/hate relationship with Scoop, I lean more toward loving him, but I think he's about on par with Allen Griffin, maybe a little higher on the list. I'm not sure I can put him top 5 on the PG list.

I wonder if you asked this after last year if Scoop would finish ahead or behind of Michael Edwards. :)

Autry belongs on that list, IMO.

Possibly Flynn?

Autry is one spot ahead of Scoop in terms of overall assists, and IMO, Flynn wasn't here long enough to belong on that list. However he's probably the most dynamic and athletically gifted PG we've had since Pearl or Douglas.

Kind of crazy that Flynn and Scoop were Frosh at the same time.

Autry was a fantastic player. Four year starter who had as good of a senior year as just about anybody we've ever had. He DEFINITELY belongs on the top 5 list. My opinion only, but he was better than Hart [who I love, as well].

Autry as a senior was possibly top three. Ended his career memorably as well with his performance against Missouri.

I only started with the G-Mac era (once I got to SU in fall 03') so I can't comment on Autry, was he better than Hart? I think Hart's our all-time steals leader.

The thing with Scoop is that in the four years he played we were NIT, SS, round of 32 and E8. And that with some really talented teams. There will always be the what if OA didn't get hurt and the what if Fab played in the tourney. Both were likely FF seasons with those two and possible NC's but they didn't happen. I'm a big Scoop fan, love how he improved his game and got a lot out of SU as a person but I'm not sold on top 5. Perhaps I need some time and perspective.

Agree completely. If he hadn't had bad knees, Red would have been in the NBA. Great size and strength, and he could really score. He was always one of my favorites.

And if we are basing this in large part on how they finished careers, I'd put Z up there. To this day he remains my all-time favorite SU player. He's the reason 3 is my favorite number.

Mayor of Detroit, or was he strickly a shooting guard? too young to have ever seen him play.

I'm a big numbers guy, and see Scoop at #6 on the all time assist list while losing his starting spot Freshman year and coming off the bench his Sophomore year. He only started 82 of his 140 games at SU. (140 is an SU PG record.)

Imagine what his totals would have been had he started more games. He finishes 12 assists behind Autry for #5 and could have passed him if we got to the national title game. Also considering he did arguably more to turn his career around at SU from where he started, he's in my top 5.

Autry was a beast , his senior year was similar to allen griffen's senior year.

This is a very interesting question for someone who knows most of these guys, which means I can't answer it by considering only their stats. For whatever reason, a list of SU point guards contains some of the most likable guys ever to play at SU.

For whatever reason, I didn't really know Hart or Flynn, but I am friends with Sims, GMac, Autry, Griffin and Scoop (I was actually invited to the weddings of two of them)... and I know Sherm and Pearl to a lesser extent.

In other words, to me this question is like asking "which of your children do you love best?"

Each of them was very important to the program...and each of them made a unique contribution -- whether it was Sims in the 1996 tournament run, or GMac in the 2006 BET (and 2003 NC run) or Flynn in the six OT game, or Pearl and Sherm in the 1980's, or Autry in the early 1990s, or Jason Hart in late 1990s, or Allen Griffin immediately afterward, or Scoop most recently.

What I am saying, I guess, is that it is hard to compare them and their contributions to SU basketball. They were each there at a unique time... and they each made a unique contribution. I will just say that they were all great for what they meant to the program.

Hart was a great defensive guard, but only average on the offensive end. Autry was a big physical guy driving to the rim. His shot developed over time. He started out as a big guard who ran the break well, had good springs and played physical defense. His outside shot developed over time. Took him a while to really come into his own, but he was very good.

As someone older than you, you can't just stop at Top Five:

1. Sherman Douglas
2. Pearl Washington
3. Jonny Flynn
4. Adrian Autry
5. Gerry McNamara (lower for me, because I thought he was a better 2 guard)
6. Scoop Jardine
7. Jason Hart
8. Lazarus Sims
9. Billy Edelin
10. Eddie Moss
11. Allen Griffen
12. Gene Waldron

To me, legacy implies remembrance. 15 years from I will remember Sims for 1996 before I remember Scoop.

I'd go with:
1. Pearl
2. GMAC
3. Sherm
4. Sims
5. Flynn/Autry
7. Scoop/Hart
9. Edelin
10. Griffin
