7th in the country with 44.4 pts per game.

7th in TD's with 52. Every one above has only played 9 games.

Here's the kicker, 1st in the country with 27 FG's. 2nd is LSU with 21. 3rd most is 17. Talk about Szmyt happens.

Those 10 extra FG's are why it feels like the offense still has significant upside. SU leads the country in combined scores (TD's+FG), and that's with 7 redzone possessions that ended up with no points.

Babers is getting this production with 2 and 3 star talent. Why would he leave with a 4 star QB in the wings, big time transfers, and his own recruits that are developing. And he has the best kicker in the country as a fall back.

Szmyt is probably worth 3 or 4 ppg over the average kicker - just an estimate, it's a big difference

We shouldn't be surprised. After all, that is what we thought we were getting with Dino.

If the defense gets to be elite someday, as Keith Jackson would say, "Katie, bar the door!"

Very true but one thing this D has done this year is help get the O the ball with turnovers which I'm not sure will always be something we can count on each year.

True dat.

I think they have the formula on defense already. Edge rushers, playmakers in the back, there's to many possessions for this to be an "elite" defense beacuse of attrition. This defense should attract top end DE's because of the volume of opportunities they are going to have to make plays.

Am tempted to agree but then again, the guys getting the interceptions a will be coming back for 2 or 3 years. Interesting to contemplate.

Agree...isn't it nice to have a situation like this to even debate?

Edit: Has anyone else ever thought this...the O will be good and SU will be a tough team to beat but once the D is really good, we're talking competing for Championships?

Beats the debates about how much we sucked and who should or shouldn't be fired.

Its fun to be able to split hairs over winning performances rather than arguing over which play lost the fame.

We owe so much to this class.

Aye, tis true. Having a class with class that worked their tails off that will always be remembered.

We are two games and two 4th down plays from competing for a championship this year. Good to be relevant again.

With the TO's, definitely not something you can count on year after year. But in the same sense, it's a direct result of the style of defense we are running. Other than the difference in offensive production, this team is really similar to the Chicago Bears teams with Urlacher and Devin Hester. Tampa 2 defensive philosophy and really good Special teams, the Bears also ran the ball really well and would have had a good passing offense if Rex Grossman didn't think everyone on the field was on his team.

But the defensive philosophy is causing these TO's just as much as anything. Pressure on the QB, pressure by their offense to score, forcing them into passing situations, play a lot of zone to take advantage of bad throws. The only thing I don't see this team being great at but I see the effort at times, is stripping the ball like the Bears did. If the team did that too, on top of the fumbles and INT's, I think we would see similar TO margins year after year. We've gotten lucky with some weird fumbles by the other team in a few games but we've also forced a lot of TO's through different types of pressure. I don't see that going away because it's the philosophy of this type of defense.
