Secret Scrimmages

You can either do 2 open scrimmages against non D-1 teams or an open scrimmage vs non D-1 and a secret scrimmage vs a D-1 team.
It must be slightly different than this as a quick look at the list posted showed Cincinnati, Duquesne and GW all having multiple secret scrimmages. Maryland scrimmaged both Cincinnati and UVA also.

Good point. I didn't explain that well. You can do a maximum of 2 and they can be either open vs non division 1 schools or closed vs division 1 schools or a combination.

Follow the whole conversation. Exhibition games are against inferior competition. Secret scrimmages can be against peer programs without hurting the resume.
Exhibition games dont have to be against inferior competition.Syracuse played the Soviet Union national team once upon a time. What rule says you have to play a inferior opponent?

It’s as simple as this

Exhibitions = $$$$$ from tickets/concessions/parking etc

Secret scrimmages = No $$$$

Obviously we give up ability to play better competition but I think we have faired well for most part typically early season except for a few rare occasions. Attendance surely won’t be the same as regular season crowds but I’m assuming season tickets still include exhibitions costs baked into their package plus many basketball starved fans are just itching to get out there and see some live game action which brings in more as well. With the secret scrimmages there would be a nice chunk of change that we’d miss out on and I’m sure Athletic dept doesn’t want that.

I am one of those itching fans. Damn, it itches!

Now that we've read this, do we have to die?

I don't remember how we did vs the Soviets, but didn't we lose once to Marathon Oil or another AAU team.

Edit: This article from 1994 said Marathon went 8-0 vs the Big East.

Wonder if that’s still true. Season ticket holders get the exhibition tickets with their package. Doubt that there‘s a huge sale of walk up tickets plus we pay these teams to come here and play I believe. Doubt it’s a big money maker and might lose $.

Yeah, my first thought was how much does it cost to play these games, where there is no money coming in? Gotta pay to fly somewhere to play a good team? Plus meals and hotels? I imagine teams split the costs? Otherwise, who the heck would ever agree to flying somewhere else for one of these?

That game was 33 years ago.

Here is an article from 2004 about exhibition rule changes.

And if you can't play open exhibitions against other D1 teams as someone else pointed out, you have to play inferior teams outside of secret scrimmages.

We beat the Soviets. The Soviets went 2-6 during their tour against college teams. I don't know who else they played.

We are Syracuse. All are inferior.
