Also an interesting discussion about it on reddit:

Again.... if not now for an 8 team playoff, when? I don't buy the well then people will want 10, or 15...

It's this simple. There are 5 major D1 football conferences. That's 1 more than there are CFP spots.

I think that’s one reason why the last half decade we’ve seen even great separation between a small set of “haves” and the second tier P5 teams. With room for four in the playoff, the major bowls have been diminished. At least when it was only two playoff teams, the other big bowls still felt kind of big. Now they are afterthoughts.

If we don’t go to 8, we might need to go back to 2. And that’s not going to happen. Better to go to 8 than to stay at 4.

Would the 8 team help the group of 5 or independent minus ND?

Sixteen is the right number if people want to be honest and give every team a shot. All 10 conference champs and six at large bids.

Stop arguing that is too much. The NFL has a larger pool. The lower divisions have four round tourneys.

Most other sports have tourneys with approximately 15-20% of teams in the tourney, there is no legitimate reason why D1 football cannot do the same.

The truth is simple, the P5 wants to keep the G5 down for prestige purposes, and money. ESPN likely does, too, though probably only for $$$$ reasons.

Conferences and teams want to keep bowl money away from the NCAA. For the record, I agree with this completely.

Use the bowls for the playoffs and keep other bowls for mid-week filler. Keep the NCAA out of the playoffs. Nobody can complain, they will anyway, but they have no listeners.

If this is case the season should be 10 games.
9 conference games.
1 nonconference game.

The team winning the championship shouldn’t have to play 17 games.
Which they would under the current system.
12 regular season
1 conference title game
4 playoff games.
That is too many games for college players.

So reduce the season to 10 regular season games. If the decision is go to 16 team playoff.

considering that only a few teams are gonna play more than 12-13 as it is in this system.. right now good teams play 12 plus the bowl..
in current system
60-80ish play 12-13 and a bowl
6 play 12 + conf + bowl
2 play 12 conf title and a playoff game
2 play 12 play conf title and 2 playoff games
so 12/13/14/15 games

so 2 play 15 and a few play 14

in a 16 team playoff
60-80ish teams will play 12 and a bowl

2 will play 12 plus conf title and 4 playoff games
2 will play 12 play conf title and 3 playoff games
4 will play 12 play conf title and 2 playoff games
4 will play 12 plus conf title and 1 playoff games

so 2 play 17 and 2 play 16 and the rest play the same as before

16 teams really only changes things for 8 teams or so

Why should the best players play a pro season without getting paid?

15 games vs. 17 games is a lot for a physical sport like football.
If the players in the playoffs get compensation then do it.

so why do they do it in every other division where they also dont get a scholie?

the next step is pay them and get rid of scholies altogether and kids find out school costs money and 10 schools play in a league and everyone else quits the sport..

as the numbers show only a few kids go beyond the 14 they already play.

The FCS plays 11 regular season games.
The champion plays 15 games.
Just like the FBS CFB playoff winner with 4 teams.

so go back to 11 games.. but revenue is lost.. the kids not going pro dont care how many games they play and thats 95% of the kids playing the sport.

I said scale back the regular season and expansion makes sense.
It’s just these kids need protection from themselves.
No way a college football team should be playing more than 15 games in the season.

The sport is too taxing. If they get compensation for playoff games then go ahead.

maybe increase the perk for a bowl or playoff game. dont pretend its a tax free gift..
