Serious Dino Babers Question

The campus is in a lousy location. The Colosseum sucks. If you don't win 10 games, the alumni are calling for your head. There are a few great schools to recruit from: LB Poly, De La Salle, Mater Dei and Compton, but that's it. The cost of living and the traffic means you can't live on the beach. When you can make the HOF where you are and be the king of NY, why would anybody take that job?

The SU campus is in a lousy location. One wrong turn and you're on the South Side. The city itself is one of the ten poorest in the country.

From 2015:
Who should be the next coach at USC?

With the USC and Awbren jobs more than likely opening up at the end of the year, would Babers reject his coach-in-waiting offer from Clemson? The Clemson job may not be open at year end like the other two.

I missed the tongue in cheek emoji. Is this even a half serious question?

The lifestyle issue is a factor. Dealing with traffic and such. This isn’t the deep south or Canton, Ohio where all the kids live and die with football and nothing else to do. So what if you can’t live ON the beach? You’re close enough to it anywhere in LA. Certainly from Westwood, Santa Monica (obviously), Brentwood, etc.

The Coliseum is awesome. A real nostalgia feeling like at Ohio Stadium. Beg to differ strongly and it’s undergoing the start of a huge renovation currently. The area around campus has changed a lot. Visited there in June. A train stop by USC/Galen Center now. All that has been cleaned up. All the way from campus/Coliseum to downtown is nice now. Downtown has also expanded almost all the way down now to USC with thriving urban life. Used to be really sketchy and empty going up Figueroa towards downtown and Staples Center. USC bought up a lot of wasteland around there and to the N and W of campus. University Village is sweet now.

Hi SoBeCuse - I have lots of ties to both schools as well. Do you really think SC is fading in LA? I think if they turn it around - which they will one way or another - they'll be top dog in that city. The alumni network is so incredible there - coupled with the traditions, cheerleaders, etc.

I think it's the top job in the country. Better than Bama. I may be crazy - but USC has everything going for it - and less competition than elsewhere.

If I was Dino - and they asked me - I'd bolt. He'd absolutely destroy there, unfortunately for us.

Check this out. Pretty valid, IMO. I just think kids growing up in SoCal have SO many other lifestyle choices as opposed to the deep south where football is everything.

The school just doesn’t seem interested in making a huge hire. Chris Peterson really wanted the job. He’s an alpha type (what they need) and USC wouldn’t grant him the coaches he wanted and all the power. No question Dino would be fantastic there.

If the Trojans do in fact fire Helton, and make a run at Babers...He is Audi 5000. That school as a ton of $$$ and Babers would own the Pac-12.

They haven’t spent in football. Not since Pete C. I mean how the hell is Helton even a finalist for the gig? NO experience, hires a rookie QB coach, and brings in his former Conf USA rube friends as other coaches. It’s just crazy.

Alabama’s problem is that the fans expect Saban.

Otherwise, Alabama >>>>>>>>>> USC.

College football's $100 million question: Can USC, Auburn and Louisville afford to fire their coaches?

15 million plus buyout, on a contract he just extended. Be very bad for the AD. OL coach firing, etc. Is an attempt to keep their jobs for another year.

32 mil Auburn.

I'm just looking at Wake. We're getting ahead of ourselves, again. Gbo. You played it like a puppet master. ;-)

Thamel didn’t do his homework. Clay makes a little more than Babers at $2,625,925. He stated that he assumes Clay makes at least $4M, lol. I mean I’d assume that too at a place like USC. Even Kyle Whittigham makes $3.7M.

If Dino left for USC or a factory school I wouldn’t blame him.
He would be stupid to leave for Auburn and that hornets nest of division he would be in.
I just hope Dino is like Art Briles minus the scumbag ness and who turned down Texas like he did while at Baylor.

Lol no it’s not
I agree its not, and I know you aren't arguing this, but, I will throw in my perspective that the Maryland job looks better on paper than it actually is. It seems like a sleeping giant, given its location and access to top talent. However, no one has actually been able to make it really run, even with crazy UA money. (The fridge had a few solid 10 win years I guess) Would definitely take a top guy to pull it out of the funk it's in. Doubt they will be able to get someone like that at this point. The dust will need to clear.

Yeah. It’s a better job in theory. And they’d have to clean house first.

It does seem possible that I sent that...
gbo:. Is lake Clemson man-made, or was it there when campus was built.
(One of my favorite campuses, BTW)

Lake Hartwell? Yes it is man-made. I think the school was there first but I don't know.

Thanks man. It's a great campus. I loved my time there. Has your son made a decision on college yet? I'm sorry if I missed it.

No. Team is moving on to states on Saturday.
Clemson not in the mix at this time ☹️. Most likely Albany, Mahattan or LaSalle.

The Maryland job in Louisville's spot would be excellent. Not in that half of the B1G though. Great recruiting location but most of the talent doesn't want to travel to the rust belt for their games or Piscattaway.

I have a parade to attend in the morning so I don't want to be a sore winner and slam LA fans but the Carroll era and the relevance since were predicated on no NFL team. I think them and UCLA are in trouble in terms of fan support. Gonna be tough to fill those two venues going forward. The Lambs should be a top 5 NFL team for the next 5 years there isn't a RB comparable to Gurley right now and Goff is very good.

I think there is too much parity in the PAC 12. I like the league and think its fun to watch and follow but the best team at this moment WSU could easily lose out.

Is he going to turn down the NFL to fight with other blue bloods for 5 stars? 1 decent season at USC will result in an NFL job with all the bells and whistles and personnel control that Marrone never got. If that is the objective you don't leave us.

Look at next years road opponents forget about the games in our climate controlled Dome.

Liberty- TD isn't going to struggle week 1 again and its LIberty.
Maryland- How many players will transfer this offseason? Walkons might see the field. Thats getting ugly.
FSU- Likely still in dumpster fire mode
Ville- Dumpster fire mode
Duke- Best ACC road crossover game we could draw.
NC State- Might be the toughest of the batch but I'd rather play them in Raliegh than play them again with Finley.

If I am Dino I ride the only indoor stadium in FBS and the second coming of Jimmy G to an NFL job and tell the big name schools to kick rocks. I think we lose him to the NFL but he leaves us a solid successor unlike the alum who even stripped the house of all the copper wiring when he moved out and drove down thruway.

Would like to hear your argument as to why Maryland might be in the same ballpark as cuse for fb. Apart from being in rhe B10, i don't see one advantage or reason they might be viewed as a better program. we have a better and more successful hx, play in just as good a conference (ok, if you want to say the B10 is better), and our gameday atmosphere as well as stadium blows theirs away. Interested to hear your argument.

All of these are debatable, and it’s interesting that you glossed over recruiting territory.

Glossed over recruiting territory? As in Maryland's advantage Being in the mid-Atlantic?
