Serious question...

I agree that some of our players may lack toughness and that in turn may hurt rebounding, and probably everything else. But I have to disagree that rebounding is all effort. Many other things come into play. Jumping ability, jumping speed, second jump speed, hands, a nose for the ball, a knack for establishing position, ability to absorb contact, size/weight/strength, and most importantly imo for long rebounds, timing.

OB was a monster on the boards tonight. It was a delight to watch in person.

Marek can jump and has good instincts but it’s hard for him to hold his spot. He certainly gives effort.

Chukwu, as we have discussed ad nauseum, cannot get off the floor or hold his ground. One time tonight, he was literally fouled/pushed a foot off his spot by UB. The ref called a travel. The crew tonight was horrible btw.

Sid, I don’t remember.

Our guards certainly could be quicker to the ball even though they’re often out at the three point line. More than half of Buffalos shots were threes.

1) The mere fact that our players are closing out on an outside shooter ( running towards the sideline) in the zone defense takes at least one and sometimes multiple players (potential rebounders) out of the play. It also allows the other team's players (not just shooter) the sense and unobstructed path towards the basket to corral a longer rebound of at missed 3. Rebounding Advantage = other team.

2) One of my pet peeves...... We know we are not shooting well from the free throw line. Jimmy pulls everyone off the line to set our zone defense when we are shooting a foul shot. Thus a missed free throw is an UNCONTESTED REBOUND for the other team. Obviously, that equates to a ZERO per cent chance of an offensive rebound. 100% rebounding advantage = other team.

Those are couple thoughts of the top of my head. Both are symptoms created by 100% zone. I didn't mean to turn this into the zone hating thread. However , they are facts related to our use of the zone and rebounding issues.

The zone also has advantages. We gain possessions in other ways. We hope to get enough steals, deflections, turnovers to offset any rebounding disadvantage due to the zone/long rebounds (which are often created by forcing the other team into a bad shot). As far as #2 goes the first solution would be to make free throws.

There's no such thing as zone rebounding. Once the shot goes up, you aren't in a zone. You want to get the ball. Find the nearest guy and get inside of him.

I hate the center close-out thing. it takes him out of the play. the zone should be able to rotate over when the ball goes in the corner.

Perhaps a question for the next show? ;)
