Class of 2026 SF Vaughn Karvala (WI / BellaVistaAZ) Offered

Stewart was all but gone when he transferred to LaLumierre. He didn’t want to stay in NYS. His only real tie to SU was Hop, who wasn’t here anymore. From what’s been posted on the board here over time, Huerter and Jackson were JB’s fault. The asst’s had them on the hook and JB did the “wait and see” bs.
Wasn’t Huerter an issue with scholarship limits due to sanctions? IIRC we wanted him to prep for a year until we had an open scholarship but Maryland had room in his class.

You might be right. I may have been thinking about Brunson. All I know is Huerter was ours to lose. As was Brunson. Trying to remember what was posted here over the past several years.

Asked Huerter to prep and he got impatient and committed to MD.

After the 2015-16 season ended, Malachi turned pro and we would have had room for him after the fact.

And Tom Sheehey, Sam Perkins, Greg Paulus, and King Rice...
I thought I read where JB didn’t recruit Rice, because we had someone (name escapes me).
Sheehey’s recruitment was in SI. The UVa assistant that went to his home hit and killed the family dog with his car. Also, they flew in Sal’s Birdland wings for Sheehey on his official visit.

Kid named Sherman Douglas.

Best story about Sheehy recruitment was from the UVa assistant (Jeff Jones?) who wrapped up a great home visit thinking Tom was in the bag, then got in his rental car, backed out of the Sheehys’ driveway and ran over the family dog. He wasn’t sure if he should call Terry Holland or just move to South America somewhere.

Tom Sheehey was a long shot from the jump. Highly unlikely. Remember, his older brother, Mike came to SU, did not play, grew disgruntled w JAB and transferred to Bonaventure. That was not forgotten.

I might be wrong, but Boo Harvey may have been the second whiff after King Rice that led to Sherm.

I recall Boo was primary, then we got Sherm. Unsure. As we like to say in my house, if only there was a hand held device on which I could research these types of things.

We we're recruiting two highly rated, Blue Chip point guard recruits to replace Pearl -- boo Harvey and Pooh Richardson. A lot of the recruiting scuttlebutt nationally was, who will Syracuse land, Boo or Pooh?

Eventually, boo didn't qualify academically and had to go juco, and Pooh Richardson eventually landed at UCLA, so we got neither.

Our plan c was a lesser-known recruit, even though he was a McDonald's All-American, from Dave Bing's old high school. He ended up being by far the best of the three.

That’s how I remember it too. Was living in Binghamton at the time. Once we signed Sherm it was UNC or Providence for King. He was much better in the open court with a running team so I thought Providence may have been a better fit for his skill set at the time but he ended up a solid three year starter at Carolina.

Pooh was a terrific player. Tenth overall selection.
He and Sherman had nearly identical professional careers. Uncanny actually. Pooh was a lefty.

He has been playing (along with Hakeem’s son and Eddie House’s kid) on Team Johnson in the NBPA Top 100 Camp this week…

The situation with Huerter was moronic. JB was being stupidly cautious in the wake of the sanctions. Everyone was predicting we would win the NCAA appeal and get 11 scholarships instead of 10, which would have given us room to bring in Huerter. Plus, players transfer EVERY single year. And with Huerter coming in, a guy like Kaleb Joseph or Frank or others would have transferred out. It was so so dumb. Huerter had a fantastic spring and summer and wanted to reclass (I believe move back to his original class), and we should have just pulled the trigger considering what a hot prospect he was. Instead we asked him to prep for a year even though he was getting major program offers from schools like Maryland. It infuriated me at the time. You never know how things are gonna shake out with rosters an entire season in advance. You don’t let a guy like this slip through the cracks. And lo and behold, the next spring, we had a bunch of transfers after the season, got one scholarship back, and would have had plenty of room for Huerter. This is the kind of poor decision-making and dithering that sunk the program to historic lows.

Our approach with Huerter was dumb, no question about that. You don't try to slow roll a kid with high major options.

I get that we prioritized Tyus Battle as a 2. He was higher rated, and we got him -- and he was a very good player here. If you'd told me at the time that Huerter would be the one who went on to excel in the NBA, while Tyus would never get a sniff, I wouldn't have necessarily believed it.

Oh well.

That hair would go well with our Aussie mullet.

Looks like a good player that needs to fill out.
#1 Wisc. player 6-7 Vaughn Karvala: runs the court very well, passes are crisp, hops that help him block shots, blocks shots well, goes to the basket well, not afraid to drive to basket, follow and put back his misses, decent % from deep, hits from either corner, good defender, nice stroke on 3 balls. Will be visiting in Sept OV. Hope we get him - needs S&C.
