Class of 2024 SG Gavin Doty (NY) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (4/7/26)

Yeah I just don't understand how that is not the standard for every player. Like what is going through their brain? I have never played on a school or AAU type of basketball team in my life. But in any pickup basketball game i played, If a shot went up, i immediately would try to beat my man for position boxing out. It doesn't matter weather that is on the offensive or the defensive end. Now I know there are responsibilities for player to make sure they get back on D and not allow easy transition buckets, and i'm not sure who or how that exactly gets determined. But the number of times a shot goes up and the SU player is not moving back to get on defense nor are they fighting for rebound position is astounding. They instead just watch the shot go up and stand there boxed out... is frustrating as heck!. Its just awareness and effort. I feel like SU players have been doing that far too often, over a long period of time now. Watching Doty will be a welcome change. I hope others learn from him.

And I know darn well a player who rebounds like this is likely to also give great effort on defense and will be moving on the offensive end, making cuts and setting screens. Just playing great team basketball.
that has been the problem for way too long. everyone hangs around like someone else will get the ball and pass for the open 3.

Anyone who hasn't seen Doty play is in for a treat. I don't expect his motor to be any less effective in the ACC.
There’s 1800 players in the portal and he’s ranked in the top 80 in two services. If he wasn’t a local and went anywhere but Siena people would be happy with this pickup. There’s zero difference in taking him than taking Wilkins who also played in a weak league.

Red went the route of getting former high rated hs recruits and it didn’t work out.

I don't expect him to be a star, all he needs to be is serviceable, score a bit pass a bit, and play good defense.
I'll set the bar: Be 3 times as good as Justin Taylor.
How the hell did he start. (Sorry to disparage)

Sure, that's a factor. I struggle with the need to disparage the kids effort and accomplishments. There will be plenty of time for that should Doty underperform playing against ACC talent.
Doty had 16 points 6 rebounds vs Big10 Indiana. Folefac had 19 points and 4 rebounds in that game.

I'm not sure how to measure that . . .

Stealing two inbound passes in 40 seconds isn't happening against better talent and coaching in the ACC. Coming out of nowhere to get rebounds as a guard isn't happening against better talent and coaching in the ACC. It will just have him out of position.

Those kind of rebounds happened in the Duke game. I believe the announcers even remarked on it.

Let's let JJ go. They will have two different coaches. JJ had his strengths and weaknesses, as will Gavin. I am sure nobody will be happier than JJ, if Syracuse basketball gets back to where we should

He is a smart, athletic, tall, strong kid a good rebounder. A majority of rebounding is intuition, using your body to position. For example Chris Bell could jump out of the gym in the ACC but……

Why?

Against SU, you mean? Because yeah, we weren't really an ACC talent level team last season.
Freeman and JJ Mds AA, Kiyan, White top 30 recruits, Fennel AUS national team, Kyle top D player in country, George led ACC is assist, …not following your logic

These numbers for these kids are insane. Nonsensical. Not faulting them, but I kind of find it sad these wastes of resources.
How is it a waste? The people that produce the product that makes universities billions of dollars are finally getting a share of it, for the first time, ever. The kids, who were tethered to a school and a coach for 4- 5 years because they were punished if they wanted to change schools, no matter the reason. If schools are hurting, pay the coaches less and reduce the staffs. Reduce travel expenses by playing in more geographically aligned conferences. For basketball, why not have men and women play double headers for conference games? Players getting paid is the least of the issues.

I hate this argument it’s dumb and lazy. Nobody disagrees they should make money but the way the system is now is dumb. All the money should be coming from the universities not universities asking fans and donors to fund their teams. It should not be relied on what school has the most donors that is just stupid.
Oh, I agree with this. Revenue sharing should be just that... But the post I was responding to was objecting to the amount a kid like Doty was offered.

The free market says he is worth that much... Until collective bargaining becomes a thing in college sports, it can't be controlled. This while thing started because a local judge in Georgia simply made a ruling that kids could be paid.

Typical for the NCAA, chaos ensued.

The current "system" is wild, and desperately needs an overhaul.

But I'll often give pushback to anyone who thinks it's wrong for college players to participate in the free market, and share in making money off the sports that they play.

I don’t fault the players. I would do the same. My biggest issue is you can have a millionaire fan buy a team. To me that’s just stupidity

MAAC basketball, I guess.
ESPN is big on ignoring the game so they can show reaction shots. They miss important plays frequently because they want to show a player giving high fives, or even fans celebrating in the stands.

MAAC games are produced in house by the school. Camera just out of place as the steals were truly out of nowhere. Siena broadcasts are better than lots of other schools. If you want to see some truly bad broadcasting put on a Mount Saint Marys, Canisius or Niagara game.
