Class of 2025 SG Hudson Mayes (CA) Portal from UC San Diego / Visiting

I’d have to imagine this is just middle to end of bench type deal with the potential to continue to develop into something down the line as he’s only going to be sophomore and showed a lot of growth down the stretch of the season. Obviously we all know the portal jumping dominates the landscape but there is still kids here and there staying multiple years and finding big roles. 11ppg, 5.6rebounds in 24mpg. Good rebounding numbers and they started two guys over 6’8 so that number is actually pretty impressive. Shot 35% from 3 but it was only on 35 attempts the whole season. 1.5OPM, .9DPM. So grades out slightly positive overall, You need guys like this to fill the roster still it’s just hard when other schools can over starter roles potentially, etc.

I imagine this is a Mayes or Tobiason thing, sort of coming for the same position. I would prefer Tobiason (he is older and more ready to make a bigger impact day 1) but Mayes 36% from 3 as a Freshman is really nice.

I don't feel he's just a fill the roster guy. Seems like a guy if you can get him to stick around can be a key contributor as a junior and senior. Has ACC size just needs some more reps. Seems like a high ceiling guy if you can hold those shooting numbers at a high volume. 80% FT shooter gives you hope that the stroke is pretty solid

Tobiason is the much better scorer right now. I would prefer him too if it was one or the other

It’s almost like you didn’t read what I said at all wow

This dude was listed at 6'1" in HS and 6'5" as a freshman at San Diego and put up nearly 10 rebounds per 40 minutes lol. I am highly intrigued.

Kind of hoping M3 is more like 6-8 to be a stretch 4 just to have an excuse that this kid could fit along with Tobiason lol. Speaking of Tobiason - he’s got a 7-1 wingspan at 6-5..

If you’re into lineage and how it speaks to potential (I do), know this about Hudson (from his UCSD bio):
Parents: Son of Derrick Mayes (NFL Player, Packers; second-round pick from Notre Dame) and Gayle Brown-Mayes
Family: Grandfather Roger Brown played in the ABA and is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame

I want both. We probably are a bit 6’5” to 6’7” heavy though.

I wonder if this kid could play the point… he averaged over 3 apg the last 12 games of the year when things started to click for him and maybe that’s why we would be willing to add both he and Tobiason…

Maybe see we land Tobiason( hopefully confirmed soon) then look at this kid or Tillery to finish things out. We play 3G/wings at all times and thus who specifically is at the point doesn’t matter.
