Shafer, Staff, and Talent Evaluation

I've been thinking- were Shafer and staff that good at evaluating talent?

I'm watching the Pitt game right now- Dontez Ford is making an impact at WR. He transferred because we wouldn't let him switch to WR from Safety.

Jalen Harvey committed to UT-Chattanooga after leaving Syracuse. I know Terrell Owens went there, but they're a mediocre 1-AA school.

Mitch Kimball was hurt this year after transferring to Eastern Illinois.

Wayne Williams and Ashton Broyld made little impact for one of the top DII schools this year (West Georgia).

The secondary was young but weak this year, the defensive line was young and weak, the LBs were okay. No one from the O-Line stepped up, the WR and TEs were crummy, aside from Ish.

Dungey, Frederick, Strickland showed something this year. Anyone else?

I'm not being definitive here. Just opening a discussion. I'm curious to everyone else's feelings.

I'm a little surprised you say the DL was "young and weak." Yes, they were young, but there's clearly some good talent here in Clark, Slayton, and Samuels. Even Guidice looked ok in his limited minutes, and he's a kid I never expected to see on the field this year.

Every team misses on some recruits, which you listed some of ours. I think the staff did a good job of getting some under the radar talent to come here, but not enough talent overall.

Sometimes it isn't a lack of athletic talent that keeps a kid off the field. Heading to another school won't change that fact if a player has bad habits, poor work ethic,trouble with the mental aspect in learning plays or lacks motivation etc. Not saying it's the case with every kid who leaves and isn't successful elsewhere but it can also be confirmation why they didn't get playing time here rather than being an indictment of the coaching staff.

I think they did a decent job of looking under every rock but as Gump says "Sometimes I guess there aren't enough rocks."

What we don't know is the universe from which the staff could realistically recruit. IMO they did as well as possible under the circumstances. They fund some real treasures and let the roster better than they found it. The full measure of the job they did won't be known for a couple of years.

I am starting to think that offers from certain G5 programs are worth more than many of the P5 programs. I would be more impressed with an offer from Northern Illinois for example than Purdue, Illinois, Indiana, Rutgers, Wake Forest, Oregon State, Kansas and Iowa State.
