I think above all else he SHOULD and WILL be the head football coach of Syracuse University in 2015.
  • He got to a Bowl game and won in year one
  • Recruiting seemingly is a little better
  • Injuries crucified this team in an unbelievable manner
  • The kids never seemed to quit from almost reports
  • It is nearly unheard of to can a coach after two years and not an awful track record OVERALL from DC to HC
  • Brand fit/PR wise, he's not a Bill Callahan at Nebraska or Rich Rod at Michigan; it's not a blatantly bad culture fit
Further:
  • New chancellor clearly has different objectives than Cantor and instituting a lot of change somewhat early on
  • Athletic Department unquestionably getting benchmarked and assessed, the appearance in front of the NCAAs putting further focus on this area I imagine
  • Gross was a Cantor hire; will he be around after June 30, 2015? And if not, wouldn't you want a new AD to be accountable to the football program then?
  • With the move into the ACC and influx of new $$$, bizarrely, the University can afford a year or two of the team not performing well versus the horrible timing of UCLOWN's football situation
But regarding the quality of the product to my non-football eye:
  • The product taunts even the staunchest of fans to watch it. Painful to watch. No way should this team be THIS bad and to have Pitt smoke us is as embarrassing as it gets
  • We are collectively going batsh!t on the decision to punt in the fourth quarter, but the bigger headline was how awful we were performance, coaching wise, especially on offense and special teams
  • This D loses A LOT next year.
  • Shafer has referenced ISIS in previous post game overviews and yesterday went on and on about all the injuries, quickly being followed up by ("that's not an excuse...") even though clearly, he was giving excuses
So, I suspect:
  • BC blows us out. If this was a Pitt performance after a week off, goodness for what next week will bring
  • Lester is the OC next year, George is long gone to become WR coach in the South and a dedicated ST coach arrives
  • Lots of offseason stuff about getting healthy, refocused on a "hardnosed approach", we will have an over-the-top hope/belief that Eduard is the answer and we will dare to have hope for 2015. Because, that's what we do.
  • A new AD will be sought. Outsider.
  • The guy that keeps bringing up the ACC Network and those damn "Whispers, whispers..." will drive me mad.
  • I suspect that we will be having the same discussion of what new head coaches we all want at this time next year and an increase in "Could Marrone or Hackett come back?" even though snowballs will survive hell in a more likely scenario. Because, you know, that's what we do.

Id rather wait until gross is gone next year and have an outsider hire a new football coach. I was just looking at coaching salaries on coacheshotseat.com, we need to up our salary to 2M to get a proven HC.

Anyone who punts the ball on fourth and one, down by a ton in the fourth quarter can leave now...he's a terrible coach...

Interesting observations.

From a purely objective standpoint, it seems that Gross has done enough to keep his job.

BB is great with a FF appearance.

Soccer is great.

Lacrosse for men and women is great.

Field hockey is great.

FB has three bowl wins in last 5 years.

ACC.

IPF.

He may be a bit controversial and he may spend money differently than others would.

But, on the whole, he has a a very good record.

Don't forget FH and both men's and women's XC

What drives the bus?

Field hockey? Soccer? Lacrosse?

No.

It's an Athletic department, not a football department. Yes, football drives the bus, but it's far from the only passenger.

Let's say you're a manager of an organization that has subsidiaries that vary in size.

Two of those subsidiaries make up 75% of your profit margin (men's basketball, football). There is one other division that makes up about 10% (men's lacrosse), leaving about 15% - which is split among 16 others.

If one of the two subsidiaries that makes up the majority of your profit margin is hemorrhaging in the red, you aren't going to look very good. Even if the 16 others are doubling their profits.

Business doesn't work that way, and neither does college athletics.

As much as they are similar, a university is not the same as a corporation. Their primary goal is not to maximize profits. The athletic department is there to serve all student-athletes. Whereas I don't necessarily disagree with your premise, the CEO is the university president. He has other things on his plate than only athletics. Athletics is not the highest item on his priority list.

Check your math, bro. That's why you're not the AD. Or an accountant. ;)

I am pro-Gross. I think with some modifications on budget controls and overhaul on fundraising, Athletics could be great overall.

I would just bet a dollar that after 10-11 years, all parties move on.

He is a very good AD and did a fantastic job getting us into the
ACC.
we would of gotten in acc either way after politics blocked us last time but our Olympic sports have improved a lot under gross

Either Gross does not see that what worked in the olympic sports would work for football, or he is not allowed to do the same thing for football.
