The Giants have been in the World Series 18 previous times and the Tigers 10 previous times. But they've never played eachother:
1905 Giants
1907 Tigers
1908 Tigers
1909 Tigers
1911 Giants
1912 Giants
1913 Giants
1917 Giants
1921 Giants
1922 Giants
1923 Giants
1924 Giants
1933 Giants
1934 Tigers
1935 Tigers
1936 Giants
1937 Giants
1940 Tigers
1945 Tigers
1951 Giants
1954 Giants
1962 Giants
1968 Tigers
1984 Tigers
1989 Giants
2002 Giants
2006 Tigers
2010 Giants
They have been like ships passing in the night. But now they will finally meet. It made me wonder what combinations of the 16 pre-expansion major league baseball franchises have yet to meet in the World Series. Here are the ones I came up with:
The Braves have never played the Browns/Oriloes, the Red Sox, the Tigers or the White Sox.
The Caridnals have never played the Indians or the White Sox.
The Cubs have never played the Indians or the Senators/Twins.
The Dodgers have never played the Tigers.
The Giants have never played the Browns/Orioles.
The Phillies have never played the Athletics, the Indians, the Senators/Twins, the Tigers or the White Sox
The Pirates have never played the Athletics, the Indians or the White Sox.
The Reds have never played the Indians or the Senator/Twins.
That's 20 of the potential 64 match-ups, so 69% of all the possible match-ups have taken place. For the rest we have to blame the historial lousiness of the Phillies and Indians, (who are each in 5 of the match-ups that haven't happened, including one with eachother), the Braves and White Sox, (4 each), and the Pirates and Senators/Twins, (three each but they did play eachother in '25).
Possible ones to look for next eyar, based on the state of the teams now:
Braves-Tigers, (I don't think the Orioles will sustain this year's success)
Dodgers-Tigers
Phillies, (who I think will make a comeback)- Athletics
