He said nobody with any credibility would say SU didn't belong in the tournament.
I haven't listened to it but I'm pretty sure Jimmy was responding to a question.i don't get why he cares about stuff like this so much ... unless of course he loves the motivational value. I guess that's why.
What you said...and recruiting...cant ever underestimate how cutthroat /competitive recruiting battles are. I could be wrong but i truly believe the difference between SU being left out of tourney vs making sweet 16 will have a very real effect on recruiting. If i was a coach the last thing i would want a competing coach/booster to say is "they never should have made the tourney" and then have that coach be literally correct or being able to back it up with us losing in first round. Especially when we werent in tourney last year.i don't get why he cares about stuff like this so much ... unless of course he loves the motivational value. I guess that's why.
He was. He was asked about using the statements about SU not belonging in the tournament as motivation.I haven't listened to it but I'm pretty sure Jimmy was responding to a question.
It's who he is. That competitive fire is what has motivated him since he was a kid.i don't get why he cares about stuff like this so much ... unless of course he loves the motivational value. I guess that's why.
Responded to question and emphasized "nobody with any credibility," thereby with one fell swoop dismissing most of the so-called experts who went against us. He was very calm and confident. My take is that the negative opinions bother him but he took the high road, and that's the coach I like to see!He said nobody with any credibility would say SU didn't belong in the tournament.
I'm sure those negative opinions bother him. He's a tenacious competitor with an unwavering belief in himself, and he even manages to get some jabs in when travelling along the high road. He's got seriously thin skin.i don't get why he cares about stuff like this so much ... unless of course he loves the motivational value. I guess that's why.

He's isn't always right. The people he's talking about aren't always wrong . He sometimes finds insult where there is none. He brings up minor slights often enough that it seems clear that he can't let them go.Don't misinterpret "being right" and competitive with thin skin. He's not wrong in this case. And why let the dudes who are wrong off the hook?

This is exactly right. He's taking a shot at Gottlieb without calling him out directly. As Newhouser pointed out, he did the same post Dayton. I believe for the same reason. He has said many times over the years that he thinks it's unfair that reporters can say or write anything they want without consequence. When he feels it's merited, JB has always fired back at the first opportunity. I love him for it.. . . he even manages to get some jabs in when travelling along the high road. I like that.
I really believe he is talking to one guy. He's isn't always right. The people he's talking about aren't always wrong . He sometimes finds insult where there is none. He brings up minor slights often enough that it seems clear that he can't let them go.
I think you're right. I'm just saying that he is thin-skinned in general. It's been on display for 40 years.I really believe he is talking to one guy.

I've enjoyed his shots at Gottlieb but a thicker-skinned person would have let it go by now.
Don't hold your breath. Carrying this on is good for his business.Gottlieb should have let it go by now.

I said "in this case" not "he's never been wrong" ...
I'm not saying that he's perfect with the media. He's not. He will never be. But he is right a lot. He know's more than what, 98% of reporters/pundits?
"Thin skin" implies a severe lack of confidence - so much so that he needs to respond to every quip . I don't think that's JB. I think he's fiercely loyal and uber-competitive. It's worth thinking about what the opposite of that is like in your HC. I prefer a confident, competitive, really smart guy (JB, Babers) over the opposite any day.
He probably only comes off as spiteful to SU fans and people who already disliked him. And I hardly think being called out by Jay Williams will damage his credibility. He's once again drawn attention to himself with these comments about SU. Easy pickings, as long as JB is here to take the bait.By no means do I think he ever will. It was good for business early on, as it was an easy way to draw attention to himself, but at this point he just comes off as spiteful. When a peer from a rival network is calling you out as a hater, it hurts your credibility. And that's bad for business.
