SIAP...Is Jim Boeheim the most overrated coach in sports?

I don't know, but I know what he did in 17 seasons at Texas which you can argue is a better job than Syracuse.

It's also intellectually inconsistent to downplay our title because we "signed Carmelo early" and then try to talk up the guy who couldn't get to the second weekend of the tourney with Kevin Durant.

Further - talent evaluation and recruiting are monumentally important parts of the college coaching job. You are the GM, player development guy, and X-O's coach at the college level. So if JB gets good players it is because he is doing a good job at that part of being a coach. Can't just judge based on sideline performance during games.

Or the fact that when JB took over we were literally, not figuratively a mid major program.

LOL, thinks Boeheim should have 3 or 4 more titles - meaning 5. In order to be considered great. How many coaches have 5 NC's? Wooden and... anybody else? He thinks JB should get an NC in 13% of his seasons. Wow.
Wooden might not have any championships if the NCAA policed things back then as closely as they do now.

That might be the best analytic article I've ever read.

Intellectual heavyweight from Uconn chimes in:

He is definitely overrated, but what might put him over the top in terms of the most overrated active coach in sports, is that he has held his post for almost 40 years. Good for the Powers-that-be in Upstate NY to recognize that with Boeheim, they are at least also-rans. Once Boeheim bows out in 3 years (or if he had at any point over the last 20), Syracuse vanishes from the national conversation. He wins just enough for the school to stay relevant.

The question is, can Hopkins maintain the lofty level of mediocrity that Boeheim has established? If he continues with the 2-3 zone, potentially, but time will tell."

So he's overrated, but without him, Syracuse basketball wouldn't be relevant?

P.S. - "Oh, BTW, do you happen to have a spare ACC invitation on you?"

Trying to make sense of penis envy is futile.

You are exactly right! JB has done something in Central New York that 99% of coaches could not. He built a winning program from the ground up and most importantly, sustained it!

This is my sentiment. JB has created a CBB juggernaut out of what would seemingly be impossibility. The program has had many ups and downs over last 35 years. During the lows you begin to worry and then the program comes roaring back with a vengeance. I think the real measure of JB's success will be the next 35 years as Orange BB continues to be a big part of the national conversation.

And this is how insignificant the lastbracketstanding website is.

It has a Global rank of websites at Alexa of more than 14 MILLION, and it has a daily page view of ONE.
Just because no one cares about this website doesn't mean it is worthless. For instance, I found this bit of cutting-edge writing there:

The NFL is the most popular sports league in the United States. Baseball and the MLB used to hold the title long ago, but these days it’s all NFL. The NBA has fans, but the NFL has more – way, way more. The popularity of the league is simply unsurpassed here.

Did he also ask for a Red Ryder CarbineAction 200-shot Range Model air rifle with a compass and a thing that tells time? Because that was obviously written by a 4th grader.

It's the type of hat one wears when one has their head up their ass.

I think we have a winner.

There's no downplaying of the title. He's credited with a NC. He's credited for finding and signing Carmelo early. It is, though, fair to acknowledge he won his only NC when he had the best player in college. You can extend that to reach others' specious arguments that he 'does the best with the least,' or that he 'creates big names.' But, whatever. Secondly, there's certainly no "talking up" of Rick Barnes. I'm no fan of his. I barely know anything of his 'accomplishments.' I didn't choose to use him in the article's comparison, and frankly, for the purpose of discussion, you can choose anyone some manner of longevity in the game. That, to me, isn't really the point, but if you need to nitpick Rick Barne's resume to bolster the Pro JB argument, then, again, whatever.

Not another one of these. These 15 year old wannabe writers have way too much free time on their hands.

Or the fact that when JB took over we were literally, not figuratively a mid major program.

The landscape of hoops was quite different then. We grew up with Georgetown and UConn, et al. We also didn't have a Carrier Dome. Are you suggesting we would have risen to our current 'heights' had we continued to play at Manley, or if our next home had been a traditional, 10-12k seat building? JB's successes and the Dome are inextricably linked.

Not sure i get your point, though, anyway. What is it? That JB took a "mid major" to "major" status, "elite" status, and a NC? He did that/was critically involved in that. Calhoun did that. With multiple titles. No Dome—a regular college gym and a civic space. So, where, then, is he in the "elite" ranking?

Bottom line, to me, at least, is that everyone has their own idea of what "elite" means, and the homers here have a different perspective on it than outsiders do. Bias. The kind that makes fans feel the need to defend an adult stranger as if he's their child.

Let's tackle this another way. Who, then, would be on a list of MORE overrated coaches than JB. And, by the way — another 'bottom line': people have different interpretations of "overrated." As a chant during a game, it kinda means "you suck." In a different type of dialog, it might just mean that 'the masses' tend to have a higher regard for a person than is commensurate with the actual record/accomplishments. And, everyone, again, will have a different interpretation of what's important in that kind of assessment. So, freaking out about some blogger calling out Boeheim is an odd reaction. If you don't want to acknowledge bias, then ask yourself how inclined you'd have been to criticize the choice if it had been someone who doesn't stand in front of your 'home bench.'

No. I used current college coaches because extending it would have required too much work on my part.

You don't know anything about Rick Barnes, but felt confident enough to say that he'd be just as successful if he coached Syracuse for 39 years.

Adios.
