Since 2014, where does Syracuse rank in tournament games played?

Take a guess before reading.

Don't get emotional over the answer.

Before you can win tourney games, you have to make the tourney first. Our program strategy can't be "let's sweat bullets on Selection Sunday and pray the committee lets us in after going losing 13-14 games in the regular season and going .500 in conference so we can stumble our way to a Sweet 16 and pretend everything is fine." That's not sustainable long term.

That is like a financial strategy of putting your entire 401K in cryptocurrency.

You just described the investment strategy of like 1/3 of the OT Board.

There are 360-ish D1 teams. Being a slightly better than average D1 team isn't good for a P6 team. The average D1 team this year is something like Tarleton, Harvard, Kennesaw State or UMass, etc.

A lot of people have a hard time with average as a concept absent context and think that it still means something.

Millhouse apparently is one of them.

Average isn't the same as good. I agree. This is the kind of insight that justified the membership fees here.

I think average isn't the same as sucks. Everyone in the board thinks this ridiculous.

Also Syracuse is better than all those teams

We got some crazy lucky draws. As a double digit seed no less. We were in line to play freaking Oregon St in the Elite 8 if we survived Houston (which should have been Rutgers in the Sweet 16 to play Oregon St Houston needed a late game miracle.)

Dayton
MTSU
Arizona State
TCU
San Diego St
West Virginia

All STUNK. Patriot League teams give 1 and 2 seeds tougher games.

MSU was a phenomenal win. Gonzaga was a higher seed than us. UVA comeback was great. They add up but we could have played zero games total those 3 years the regular seasons sucked.

I'm saying you can't fire a legend for being average. 9-9 in conference.
Legends absolutely can be fired when they stop performing like legends and start being average.

We're actually the outlier case, permitting program decline like this.

Average programs don't make the tourney. Programs that don't make the tourney fire coaches.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Imagine the uproar from sports fans if LeBron were to play until he’s like 55 years old and is out there doing the uncle in the driveway backdown every time he gets the ball? That’s basically what Boeheim is doing.

Larry Brown, Terry Francona, Denny Crum, Mack Brown

Most legends don't let themselves fall that far though.

I'll add Bobby Bowden, Bobby Knight, Phil Jackson, Jimmy Johnson. With the last 2 guys, they were fired shortly after winning championships!

All the emotional people are talking about how it's been getting bad for much longer than that.
1- we were not going to make it COVID year. Maybe that would have jumped teams past us.

2- regular season failure has been going on 9 years. Look at the records

3- it has only been getting worse and worse every year. Not sure how that can be argued. So yes, it may look okay from a tournament standpoint. But that does not account for last years losing record or this years awful record that is inflated from the worst schedule we have ever played.

Like nearly half of those tournament games came during one run which was two years after we were ranked #1 in the nation.

The school should not settle for just making the tourney once every couple years

The problem with these analysis, as I have been debating since 2016, is that generally the regular season is much more predictive of where we are heading in future years than getting hot for a few games in the tourney. Not that winning those games is not nice.

To those that disagreed with me at the time (2016-2019)
I present Syracuse Basketball 2020-2023.

I was talking college basketball. Larry Brown coached a hundred teams. Crum was well below 500 his last year. Mack brown probably not a great example considering they didn't get better and he's had success continuing his career

I mean you still think this conversation is worth having?

Right now? Tonight?

I agree that is a better predictor. Anyone who is predicting it will get worse before it gets better is probably right. You can't fire legends based on likely predictions, I just think you have to wait. Non legends, whatever, if the writing is on the wall, goodbye
