Not sure if it has been discussed here - but someone on another forum found a rock land county police blotter article that smallwood was arrested for shoplifting at palisades mall in rock land county, just down the Hudson from Cornwall, so I guess it was more than academics.

Could be more to the story but it's been rumored that he wasn't coming for some time. When did the arrest occur? I'm thinking they wanted him here in January to count against last year's class and he couldn't make it through admissions.

that happened after him not coming here.

He will never make it here, time to move on

Never should have even been on the radar. And some of the places he's been have been more than happy to have him leave.

Smallwood has always been a puzzling recruit to me. He's a really small back, and we already had PTG. So why would we try and pick up another scat back only a year behind Gulley? I had heard a few things about his attitude, and different disciplinary issues when he was at Cornwall. Why did we need this kid? He just seemed like a headache from the start. Broyld is another one that gives me nightmares as to why we continued his recruitment after the incident after that basketball game.

always frustrates me to no end to see some of these kids just piss away an opportunity like attending a great university on a full ride

Watch West Virginia, that ought to give you a few reasons.

You can throw one in the slot and it's not like PTG has been healthy anyways.

West Virginia's offense is a heck of a lot different from SU's offense not to mention the fact that we already had Rene here as well. My guess is that we went after Smallwood in a silly attempt to "lock down NYS." It's nice to have a slot receiver, but look at McFarlane that we brought in this year. He has prototypical size, speed, and I have not heard anything from anyone I know down there that he is a bad kid. He volunteers in the community, does well in school; the type of kid that actually deserves a scholarship, and we didn't even sacrifice that for want of talent because he has plenty of it. Scat backs only seem to work in a select few systems i.e. West Va, Florida under Urban Meyer, Oregon

Not Smallwood. Too small, to weak. Not the size he's listed at on the recruiting sites, either. Way too small.

Saw him in person and was very disappointed. No way was he even near as tall as he was reported to be, plus he was super skinny. We passed on Melvin Gordon a quality back who ended up at Wisconsin for this kid.

Article on TOS that Smallwood has "de-committed" from SU. I guess it's a face-saving move. Sort of like telling your friends that you're dumping your girlfriend, even though she broke up with you the night before.

The kid isn't going to Syracuse and that is disappointing but no need to get personal.

Smallwood has always been... Broyld is another one that gives me nightmares as to why we continued his recruitment after the incident after that basketball game.

I strongly believe you will see that Bloyld is a good kid (despite a big mistake in that incident), and one of the real good players in this class. He has size, good speed for his size, and the ability to play a number of positions. Check back in September.

I do hope I'm wrong about him for sure, but he does scare me with that incident. If he turns out to be a great kid that is great ambassador for the University then I will personally seek him out on campus and apologize to him for doubting him.

Good. I am in the Rochester area, so I read a lot about Broyld, and watched his senior year play-off game in the Dome. No doubt that he is a leader and team player on the field and certainly one of the 5 most promising recruits in the class.
In that incident (basketball game), he had been the target of taunts by hostile fans. It is a test that typical SU students will never have had. I am not excusing how he responded, just saying let's see how he learned from the mistake.

He was also very frustrated by foul trouble and saw the season ending while he could not help his team. It's a shame for all concerned that he expressed himself in the manner he did. That dark cloud will remain with him but hopefully he can mend his image by his actions on and off the field over the next 4-5 years. Goodness knows he has a gift that can be used in a positive manner.

I hope so, but it's not like he yelled you to the fans and flipped the bird, or even grabbed his junk outside of his shorts (i.e. the natural reaction to the situation). Going to the extreme of dropping trou and waving your winkie to everyone makes one scratch one's head and ask "who thinks to do that?"

Or -- who finds the need to repeat any details?
It was "an incident" --

Was I off-base with my post by making distinctions between possible reactions to the situation?

You stated you didn't excuse his reaction, yet you seem to be justifying it by saying he was taunted and that most of us can't comprehend what that feels like. What he did is still not mainstream behavior for the thousands of athletes who have been through that exact situation. Those that do react negatively to that environment have typically done so with the finger or with expletives or taunts of their own - not indecent exposure. I was merely trying to say that I wonder about the "wiring" of someone whose first inclination was to do that.

Don't entirely disagree with your sentiments, just suggesting that we don't need to have anyone draw a word-picture.
Prediction: this kid will be one of the stars of his class and we will be thankful the coaches stuck with him.
