I get that have been testing some chip in football thing to measure progress.

But how does that work in reality?

How does the chip know the knee is down?

How does the chip know when forward progress has ended by the D vs the runner?

How many chips are in a football to know where the leading forward edge of a ball is?

It’s not what you think. It just tells them exactly where the ball is in relation to the line to gain AFTER it is manually spotted by the refs as usual . They aren’t going to use it to determine the initial spotting of the ball.

Ok. So really its just some way to remove guys running on the field to check a spot.

So why do people bring up calls like the bills/KC game then when discussing it? It wont do anything to resolve those issues

It could in some cases help marking if used correctly.

the chain are obsolete tech and a waste of time. does your phone still have a cord attached ? once spotted the chip in the ball will tell you if it's a first down to three decimal places instantly .

It actually COULD determine such a spot since there was no issue of the knee being down on that play . But it wouldn’t be used

it could. But it also wouldn't know where forward progress ended and if the player was pushed back or pulled the ball back himself.

For TDs though it would be useful on plays where the knee doesn't matter.
