and it just reminds me why we've seen a dropoff in our football program.

Not the only reason, but 20 years ago the following schools weren't even a factor in the Northeast recruiting scene:

Rutgers
UConn
UMass
Buffalo

In several cases, 5-10 years ago.

Have to wonder where we'd be if those schools were still playing high school football.

Rutgers, Uconn, Umass and Buffalo still play like they are in high school...

If we were losing recruits to those schools, I'd agree with you.

Rutgers impacted us more than anyone. Pitt is probably #2. For awhile, Pitt was Rutgers/Temple level in the Big East. But it was more predictable that they'd come out of that.

UConn a little bit but that has settled with their perfect storm of Edsall leaving and the latest reorg leaving them one C short in league name.

I don't think there has been any impact from UMass or Buffalo. If anything, they get kids we don't offer. If it turns out we were wrong, so be it, but it doesn't really change anything.

Pitt upgrading to an NFL stadium, with its facilities, definitely hurt us.

Mark Whipple was my choice for coach when we hired Robinson.

buffalo, Yukon, and Rutgers are putting players in the NFL. maybe some of those guys would have been ours in the past. however you slice it we aren't getting the quality of players we used to get.

UConn may have fallen off, but they beat us for recruits, under Edsall, for about 5-7 years.

Absolutely disagree, i know you said facilities but watching Pitt play in an NFL stadium is just funny. All you see is bright bright bright yellow. They should get away from Heinz ASAP:

Pitt's recruiting got a huge lift the minute they moved in with the Steelers, and they've been benefiting ever since.

Agree that it's a poor atmosphere, but they've been able to sell the NFL thing.

It had an effect, but let's not get too melodramatic. UCONN and Buffalo won't be in play for the same recruits - We've been beating out Rutgers for recruits in NJ this cycle.

And why does everyone keep saying that we are finishing with 3 wins?

We're beating out Rutgers for recruits?

We have 2 recruits from Jersey in this class.

Hardly a haul.

add in the fla. schools USF, UCF, FIU, etc. who now take the next level below kids that FSU, UM, UF pass on that we used to get. Makes me feel like this with respect to our prospects...:(

As I posted elsewhere earlier think we need to tamp down program expectations with respect to what is achievable going forward. The college football landscape has changed so dramatically making getting great (9 win and up seasons) so much more difficult now. But they, and we, just need to keep on keeping on.

I know one thing is for sure, has never beaten us out for a recruit, never.

Quite a few actually.

You get this a lot: new rivals we never had before are depriving us of recruits. Who is on these teams we wanted badly? I'm not saying there aren't such players. i'm just wondering who they are.

How many do they have that we went after? They wanted Strickland and Ellison badly. We had another that flipped to Penn State.

2 is better than 2 years ago when we had zero interest from NJ kids.

Our peer programs are not UMASS, Buffalo, and UCONN. They are non p-5 and that divides only going to get bigger.

Khalil Mack and Branden Oliver have turned out pretty good as of late.

Players like playing there. If you have been to Oakland before then you would see that there is nowhere else for them to play. Oakland is jam packed and the Pitt campus just climbs upward on a mountain really. The newer UPMC buildings and PEC have taken up any available room in recent years.

I dont follow recruiting, but what would you guys say are the top 5 schools we typically "compete" with on the recruiting trail?
