Bowl eligibility makes the discussion really short. Heck, win a bowl and with the youth we might even get some preseason Top 25 votes.

Less than six wins means vulnerability. Forget anything else, it'll have to be on Coyle's mind especially considering we had multiple opportunities to lock up more wins. I think you can excuse one on youth, after that it's easier to be critical.

Not a fan of white knuckles, but let's make it easy and get three more.

He gets six wins he should get a huge extension.

Would be an incredible transformation. They need to get much, much better on getting off the field, either 3rd down or turnovers or score on almost every possession.

Agree. If the players definitely want their coach back then finish. If the coaches want to keep their jobs without question then play to win. Forcus and aggressive play calling all 4 quarters. I really think they are capable.

4-8 or 5-7 is technically an improvement over last season. 3-9, with nine straight losses to end the season and even then you really have to look and make sure there is someone ready to step in before you make the decision to fire him.

If I were Coyle I would be watching the next 5 games closely while putting out feelers to get a pulse of where the hot coaches are leaning. There are still too many unknown variables and Shafer could still pull a rabbit out of his visor.

If Shafer gets to 6 it's a no brainer, and i'd give him an extension. If we were to some how get to 6 with this team and it's youth it will show that he and his staff did a great job of developing the young talent. Young teams like this get better as the year goes on if there well coached. Even getting 2 wins, and being competitive in the others I think will be enough. We just can't lose out, or win 1 game, and have a couple 2 td+ losses. All that will show is the youth didn't develop, and that would be squarely on the coaches. We may be 3-4, and seemingly not a lot to play for, but the next 5 games will be crucial in the direction of the program.

5 is almost worse than 4 to me, because then you really kick yourself for dropping the ball on this three game losing streak which is worse to me than just being young and not ready to win. It's weird, but that's how it works in my head.

Could still get to the postseason with 5 wins, though.

In my eyes those younger players we have out there are getting better...and we are still fairly healthy...lets just stop with the speculation & negativity surrounding the program. If you people cannot see what's going on, then you are blind. Enough of this Shafer talk - hate the losses but first time in a long time I just love SU football again.

Still think we can get to 6-6. We need to go 1-2 in next 3 games and finish out with 2 wins. Probably...no. Hopeful...yes. It's why they play the game...these younger players just need to learn how to win.

Why do I still have faith? Every team left on the schedule is beatable.

FSU only beat Wake 24-16
Lville only beat BC 17-14 and play Wake next without their #1 QB
Clemson only beat Lville 20-17 & ND 24-22 whereas ND only beat UVA on a last minute TD
NCState only lost to Lville 20-13 but did beat Wake after they lost their #1 QB to injury - still a paper tiger
BC has no offense lost to Wake 3-0 even after they lost their #1 QB

Boys - keep the faith and let the season play out. Nothing tells me that none of the last 5 games our youngsters won't be in the game up or down 1 score in the 4th quarter here on out. 6-6 here we come! Go Orange!

Why is everyone so focused on "improvement." Shafer was brought in to continue/forward what Marrone had started, not to improve upon the disaster that he himself created last season.

Having said that, a bowl game is continuing what Marrone started and should be considered a success. Anything else should be seen as the season again being a failure regardless of what happened last year.

College football is big business. As an alum who has seen our academic ranking plummet I'd love for the football team to have more success, get more exposure, and the university to get more applicants. College football also pays the bills for all of our olympic sports. Unlike previous administrations, Coyle/Syverud have demonstrated that they understand this and are willing to commit the resources to make us a big time program -- this automatically makes Shafer's seat very hot if we don't make a bowl game for the 2nd consecutive season.

I agree that we can get three more. We need to do that.

The only thing I'm speculating about is what the threshold for a no-brain keeper situation looks like.

We needed another Shafer thread? Everyone is just going to make the same arguments they made in the other 15 Shafer threads.
Well, I wasn't satisfied.

Maybe I need a Snickers from Patrick Chewing or Adam Nougatieri.

But...they're making it in ANOTHER THREAD!!!! Maybe now, people will understand and change their minds.

We all know THAT won't be happening. ;)
